Tropical Highlights - June 2006

The pattern of tropical sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Pacific during June 2006 featured slightly warmer than average temperature west of the date line and in the equatorial central Pacific.  Weak negative SST anomalies remain near the South American coast (Fig. T18).  Accordingly, the SST anomaly in the Nino 4 and Nino 3.4 regions are slightly positive (values of 0.5 and 0.4 respectively), while anomalies are near zero in the Nino 3 region, and -0.2 in the Nino 1+2 region (Table T2).  Meanwhile, the Tahiti – Darwin SOI is negative (-0.7) in response to higher than average pressure over Darwin (Table T1, Figs. T1, T19).

The oceanic thermocline, measured by the depth of the 20ºC isotherm along the equator, featured slightly above average depth across the equatorial Pacific, except in the eastern Pacific where the depth was near average during June.  (Figs. T15, T16).  Consistent with these conditions, equatorial oceanic temperatures at thermocline depth were 1-2ºC above average throughout most of the Pacific, while temperatures were near average in the far eastern Pacific (Fig. T17).

During June, low-level winds were near-average throughout the equatorial Pacific and Indian Ocean (Fig. T20).  Regions of enhanced convection were observed just south of equator both in the central Indian Ocean and in the western Pacific (Figs. T25, T26, E3).
