1. Central and Eastern United States:
MORE VERY DRY WEATHER
Between 10 and 50 mm of precipitation fell on the Appalachian Mountains and Atlantic Seaboard while little or none was reported further west. During the last 13 weeks, precipitation generally totaled less than 300 mm, resulting in moisture shortages of 50 to 250 mm [DRY - Up to 17 weeks].
2. Colombia:
STILL UNUSUALLY DRY
Fewer than 25 mm of rain fell on western and northern Colombia during the past week. Since December 15, less than 150 mm of rain has accumulated on Colombia, yielding precipitation shortfalls of 75 to 125 mm [DRY - Up to 7 weeks].
3. Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana:
DRY ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Although 10 to 100 mm of rain fell on these three northern South American countries, 4-week precipitation totals were generally less than 120 mm and were among the lowest 10% of the climatological distribution [DRY - Up to 7 weeks].
4. Central South America:
HOT WEATHER RETURNS
Weekly departures of +2°C to +6°C dominated central South America. Highs exceeded 40°C in Paraguay and interior northern Argentina while readings in the thirties (°C) covered the remainder of the region [WARM - Up to 5 weeks].
5. Northern Scandinavia:
BITTERLY COLD CONDITIONS PERSIST
Temperatures were 2°C to 6°C below normal across northern Scandinavia, with weekly departures exceeding -10°C in parts of northern Sweden. Lows ranged from -15°C to -38°C. The mercury failed to reach the freezing mark throughout the region [COLD - Up to 7 weeks].
6. Italy:
COLD ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Weekly departures of -2°C to -5°C prevailed across much of Italy, with lows generally below freezing, except in favored locations of southern Italy [COLD - 2 weeks].
7. Southern Africa:
UNUSUALLY WARM CONDITIONS DEVELOP
Temperatures averaging 2°C to 5°C above normal dominated much of South Africa, Zimbabwe, and southern and central Mozambique. Highs generally ranged from 29°C to 42°C. The above-normal temperatures exacerbated the dry conditions across Zimbabwe and Mozambique [WARM - Up to 5 weeks].
8. Southeastern Africa:
PRECIPITATION DEFICITS PERSIST
Highly variable precipitation amounts (10 to 100 mm) were observed in northern Zimbabwe and northern South Africa while the remainder of southeastern Africa reported little or no rain. Precipitation since November 10 ranged from 100 to 300 mm, allowing moisture shortages of 50 to 220 mm to prevail across the region [DRY - Up to 15 weeks].
9. Southeastern Australia:
DRY WEATHER EXACERBATES WILDFIRES
Isolated rain showers delivered 10 to 50 mm of rain to parts of New South Wales, but the vast majority of the region received little or none. According to press reports, wildfires continued to plague parts of Australia. Most locations received fewer than 100 mm of rain during the last 13 weeks, with some coastal areas reporting up to 260 mm. Three-month moisture shortages ranged from 50 to 225 mm [DRY - Up to 20 weeks].
10. Southern Australia:
WARM WEATHER EXACERBATES DRYNESS
Temperatures averaging 2°C to 4°C above-normal, with weekly departures approaching +6°C at a few isolated locations, prevailed across eastern South Australia, southwestern New South Wales, and most of Victoria. The relatively high temperatures aggravated the dry conditions across the region. Highs generally ranged from 30°C at coastal locations to 44°C in the interior [WARM - Up to 4 weeks].
