1. Central United States:
PRECIPITATION DEFICITS CONTINUE
Southern Missouri and southwestern Illinois received 25 to 50 mm of rain while precipitation totals of 10 to 25 mm prevailed across the eastern half of the region. Little or no rain fell on the northern and northwestern sections. Although as much as 225 mm of precipitation accumulated during the last 13 weeks, most locations received less than 150 mm, and precipitation shortfalls ranged from 50 to 210 mm [DRY - Up to 23 weeks].
2. Eastern Rockies
SEVERE WINTER STORM BURIES EASTERN ROCKIES
A major winter storm dumped 70 to 180 cm of snow on the Front Range of the Rockies, including the cities of Denver, CO and Cheyenne, WY. Press reports indicate that the worst storm in nearly 100 years closed airports and highways, collapsed roofs, and exacerbated avalanche hazards in the nearby mountains [Episodic Event].
3. Eastern Canada:
COLD AIR SHIFTS EASTWARD
Unusually cold conditions, with temperatures averaging 2°C to 6°C below normal, covered eastern Quebec and the Canadian Maritimes. Weekly lows ranged from -10°C to -27°C, but the mercury managed to climb above the freezing mark [COLD - Up to 7 weeks].
4. Southeastern United States:
MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINS REPORTED
Rainfall totals ranged from 50 to 200 mm across most of Georgia and the Carolinas last week. Four-week totals of 100 to 300 mm of rain were among the highest 10% of the climatological distribution [WET - Up to 7 weeks].
5. Caribbean Basin:
WARM ANOMALY PERSISTS
Very warm weather, characterized by temperatures averaging 2°C to 5°C above normal, dominated Florida, the Bahamas, and Central America. Highs were generally in the thirties (°C) and lows remained above 20°C [WARM - Up to 5 weeks].
6. East-Central South America:
MOISTURE SURPLUSES REMAIN
Most of northern Uruguay and southern Brazil received 50 to 100 mm of rain, but little or no precipitation fell on the remainder of east-central South America. Eight-week totals ranged from 300 to 500 mm, yielding short-term moisture excesses of 50 to 250 mm [WET - Up to 9 weeks].
7. Europe:
ANOTHER VERY DRY WEEK
Little or no precipitation fell on Continental Europe as very dry conditions persisted. Fewer than 200 mm of precipitation has fallen during the last 8 weeks, resulting in short-term moisture shortages of 50 to 225 mm [DRY - Up to 8 weeks].
8. Western Africa:
HIGH TEMPERATURES PERSIST
Weekly temperature departures of +2°C to +4°C prevailed across western Africa, with highs soaring above 40°C. The mercury remained above 20°C at most locations [WARM - Up to 7 weeks].
9. Southern Africa:
STILL UNUSUALLY WARM
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 4°C above normal throughout southern Africa, with highs generally in the thirties (°C), but readings generally fell below 20°C at night [WARM - Up to 11 weeks].
10. East-Central China:
PRECIPITATION ABATES
Most of the region received 25 to 50 mm of precipitation, except for higher amounts (50 to 100 mm) in northern Jiangxi and western Zhejiang. Between 100 and 400 mm of precipitation has accumulated during the last 8 weeks, allowing short-term moisture surpluses to range from 50 to 180 mm [WET - Up to 8 weeks].
11. Tasmania:
WET ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Moderate to heavy rains (25 to 100 mm) drenched much of Tasmania, with larger amounts (100 to 500 mm) reported on the southeastern portion of the island. Precipitation totals during the last 4 weeks exceeded 100 mm, and were among the highest 10% of the climatological distribution [WET - Up to 6 weeks].
