Weekly Global Climate Highlights Map for May 31, 2003




1. Eastern United States:

COOL WEATHER SPREADS

Temperatures again averaged 2°C to 4°C below normal last week as cool conditions persisted in the mid-Atlantic. Cooler air moved into the Ohio Valley where the largest negative departures (-5°C) were reported [COLD - Up to 5 weeks].

 

2. Central and Eastern United States:

HEAVY PRECIPITATION DRENCHES MID-ATLANTIC, DRIER WEATER PREVAILS ELSEWHERE

Moderate to heavy rains (25 to 250 mm) fell on from North Carolina northward to southern Maine. Little or no rain fell in the upper and middle Mississippi Valleys while light to moderate rains (10 to 25 mm) were scattered over the remainder of the area [WET - Up to 11 weeks].

 

3. Texas:

SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS PROVIDE RELIEF

Thunderstorms dropped 25 to 60 mm of rain in parts of eastern Texas. However, less than 100 mm of rain fell during the last 8 weeks over much of the state producing deficits of 50 to 200 mm [DRY - Up to 12 weeks].

 

4. Uruguay and Adjacent Parts of Argentina and Brazil:

DRY WEATHER EASES WETNESS

Little or no rain fell on Uruguay and the adjacent parts of Argentina and Brazil. Since early April, 250 to 500 mm of rain have still drenched the region resulting in moisture excesses 50 to 280 mm [WET - Up to 12 weeks].

 

5. Western Europe:

FAVORABLY DRY WEATHER PREVAILS

Little or no rain fell across the British Isles, the Benlelux Countries, and northern France, easing the unusually wet conditions. Four-week precipitation totals (80 to 120 mm) in parts of England and Ireland were almost twice the amount expected at this time of year [WET - Up to 7 weeks].

 

6. Southern Europe:

STILL DRY

Scattered light to moderate rains (10 to 70 mm) brought some relief to parts of the region. Less than 100 mm of rain has accumulated since April 6th, resulting in precipitation shortfalls of 50 to 200 mm [DRY - Up to 12 weeks].

 

7. Northwestern Africa:

WARM WEATHER CONTINUES

Weekly departures ranged from +2°C to +4°C across Morroco. Temperatures exceeded 40°C at several locations [WARM - Up to 9 weeks].

 

8. Western Sahel:

ABOVE-NORMAL TEMPERATURES CONTINUE

Weekly temperature departures of +2°C to +3°C again covered the region with highs ranging from 35°C to 44°C [WARM - Up to 5 weeks].

 

9. India:

TEMPERATURES SOAR INTO UPPER FORTIES

Extreme heat prevailed accross southern India as temperatures reached as high as 48°C. Weekly temperature departures of +2°C to +5°C dominated ed the region. Accoridng to media reports, the heat wave has taken the lives of nearly 800 people in Andhra Pradesh [WARM - Up to 2 weeks].

 

10. Korea and Japan:

TROPICAL STORM DRENCHES REGION WITH HEAVY RAIN

Tropical Storm Linfa brought very heavy rains (100 to 200 mm) to South Korea and southern Japan, while 200 to over 500 mm of rain inundated the southern coasts of both nations [Episodic Event].

 

11. China:

WETNESS REMAINS

Moderate to heavy rains (50 to 150 mm) again drenched southwestern China and adjacent parts of northern Vietnam. Little or no rain was reported futher north in Heinan and Haanxi Porvinces. Eight-week precipitation ranged from 150 to 500 mm, yielding short-term moisture excesses of 50 to 290 mm [WET - Up to 10 weeks].
