Weekly Global Climate Highlights Map for July 12, 2003

1. Alaska:

TEMPERATURES REMAIN ABOVE NORMAL

Weekly departures of +2°C to +3°C dominated Alaska, but temperatures were as much as 5°C above normal in south-central Alaska. Highs were generally in the twenties (°C), but approached 32°C at Talkeetna (62°N) [WARM - Up to 8 weeks].

2. Southwestern Canada and Northwestern United States:

VERY DRY WEATHER RETURNS

Little or no rain fell on southwestern British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest during the past week. Although this is the relatively dry time of year in the region, 4-week precipitation totals were below 25 mm and were among the lowest 10% of the climatological distribution [DRY - Up to 6 weeks].

3. Eastern United States:

HIGHLY VARIABLE PRECIPITATION REPORTED

Torrential rains (100 to 200 mm) drenched parts of Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia while the remainder of the eastern states received 10 to 100 mm of rain from scattered thunderstorms. Between 300 and 850 mm of precipitation has fallen during the last 13 weeks, allowing moisture excesses to range from 50 to 525 mm [WET - Up to 17 weeks].

4. Northern Colombia:

WET ANOMALY DEVELOPS

Between 25 and 100 mm of rain fell on the coastal portions of Colombia during the past week. Four-week totals of 100 to 500 mm were among the highest 10% of the climatological distribution [WET - Up to 6 weeks].

5. Southern Europe and Northwestern Africa:

WARM ANOMALY RETREAT WESTWARD

Temperatures were 2°C to 6°C above normal across the region. Highs soared above 40°C in northern Africa and a few interior locations in Spain while readings exceeded 30°C elsewhere. [WARM - Up to 8 weeks].

6. Central Europe:

DRY ANOMALY PERSISTS

Little or no precipitation fell on much of central Europe, except for light rains (10 to 25 mm) in Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia. Since May 18, fewer than 300 mm of rain has accumulated on the region, resulting in precipitation shortfalls of 50 to 300 mm [DRY - Up to 8 weeks].

7. Extreme Eastern Europe:

VERY WET WEATHER CONTINUES

Moderate to heavy rains (25 to 100 mm) fell on much of the region, with locally heavier rains (up to 200 mm) in parts of Ukraine and Belarus. During the last 4 weeks, between 60 and 200 mm of rain fell, yielding totals among the highest 10% of the climatological distribution [WET - Up to 6 weeks].

8. Northwestern India:

SUBNORMAL TEMPERATURES REPORTED

Temperatures were 2°C to 4°C below normal across northwestern India, and were among the lowest 10% of the climatological distribution. Despite the subnormal readings, the mercury still exceeded 40°C at some locations and remained above 20°C across the region [COLD - 2 weeks].

9. Central China:

UNUSUALLY COOL CONDITIONS DEVELOP

Weekly departures of -2°C to -3°C prevailed across central China, with locally larger departures approaching -5°C. Highs were generally in the thirties (°C), but lows were generally below 20°C [COLD - 2 weeks].

10. East-Central Asia:

MORE HEAVY RAINS

Torrential downpours (100 to 500 mm) soaked China from eastern Sichuan and northern Guizhou eastward to Shanghai and southern Jiangsu, much of the Korean Peninsula, and parts of western and west-central Japan. Four-week precipitation totals, ranging from 100 to 650 mm, were among the highest 10% of the climatological distribution. According to the media, severe flooding ravaged parts of China [WET - Up to 5 weeks].
