1. Northwestern United States and Southwestern British Columbia:
WET WEATHER EASES
Between 20 and 80 mm of precipitation fell on the Pacific Coast from northern
California northward through southwestern British Columbia, with locally
higher totals approaching 135 mm along the Oregon Coast. Farther east,
10 to 50 mm of precipitation was reported to the lee of the Cascades. During
the past 6 weeks, the region has received 70 to 235 mm more precipitation
than normal [WET - Ended at 8 to 16 weeks].
2. Midwestern United States:
VERY DRY CONDITIONS PERSIST
Although 20 to 90 mm of precipitation were reported in parts of northeastern
Iowa and the southern half of Wisconsin, most of the region had fewer than
20 mm. Precipitation shortfalls during the last 6 weeks were generally
50 to 100 mm [DRY - 4 to 8 weeks].
3. Southeastern United States:
PRECIPITATION DEFICITS PREVAIL
Little or no precipitation fell on Florida and adjacent parts of Alabama
and Georgia, allowing 6-week moisture shortages to range from 50 to 135
mm [DRY - 4 to 10 weeks].
4. East-Central South America:
WARM ANOMALY SHIFTS NORTHWARD
Temperatures were 3°C to 6°C above normal across southern Brazil,
with highs above 35°C as far south as Irai (27°S). Meanwhile, subnormal
temperatures overspread Uruguay and northeastern Argentina [WARM - Ending
at 2 to 8 weeks].
5. Europe:
MORE MILD WEATHER
Temperatures were as much as 8°C above normal in parts of Poland, Lithuania,
Latvia, and Estonia while weekly departures of +3°C to +6°C prevailed
across most of central and western Europe. The mercury climbed to 20°C
as far north as Valley RAF, United Kingdom (53°N) [WARM - 2 to 5 weeks].
6. Western Sahel:
ABOVE-NORMAL TEMPERATURES PERSIST
Weekly departures of +1°C to +3°C prevailed across the regions,
with localized larger departures of +3°C to +4°C reported in southern
Mali. The mercury soared above 40°C across interior Senegal, southern
Mali, and most of Burkina Faso [WARM - 2 to 8 weeks].
7. Southern Africa:
HEAT WAVE EASES
Near-normal to slightly below normal temperatures covered eastern South
Africa, southern Mozambique, and southwestern Madagascar, but weekly departures
of +3°C to +6°C persisted across central and western South Africa,
where highs were generally above 30°C. The mercury soared above 40°C
at Vredendal (32°S) in western South Africa [WARM - 2 to 8 weeks].
8. Northeastern Asia:
BITTERLY COLD WEATHER CONTINUES
Temperatures were 3°C to 9°C below normal across much of central
and eastern Siberia, northern Mongolia, and northeastern China, with lows
below -20°C across the region. The mercury plummeted below -65°C
at Tunka, Russia (52°N) [COLD - 2 to 5 weeks].
9. Japan, Southern South Korea, and East-Central China:
STILL UNUSUALLY WET
Moderate precipitation (20 to 70 mm) soaked eastern Anhui, southern Jiangsu,
northern Zhejiang, and Shanghai provinces of east-central China. In Japan,
similar amounts fell on Kyushu and most of central and eastern Honshu,
with locally heavier totals (70 to 200 mm) in extreme southern Kyushu and
south-central Honshu. In sharp contrast, fewer than 30 mm dampened Shikoku
and western Honshu in Japan and the southern portion of South Korea. Short-term
(6 weeks) moisture surpluses ranged from 50 to 150 mm, with isolated higher
excesses reported in Japan (up to 540 mm), South Korea (up to 315 mm),
and east-central China (up to 190 mm) [WET - 4 to 7 weeks].
10. South-Central China:
MOISTURE DEFICITS REMAIN
Between 20 and 60 mm of rain dampened Guizhou and Guangxi while little
or none fell on Yunnan. Despite the rain, short-term (February 21 - April
3) moisture deficits of 50 to 110 mm dominated eastern Guangxi [DRY - 4
to 13 weeks].
11. The Philippines:
MORE TORRENTIAL RAINS
Heavy downpours (100 to 500 mm) drenched southeastern Luzon, southern Samar,
northern Panay, northern Mindoro, and eastern Mindanao while 20 to 100
mm fell elsewhere. Precipitation excesses during the last 42 days range
from 100 to 550 mm [WET - 4 to 11 weeks].
12. Northeastern Australia:
WARM CONDITIONS DIMINISH
Although the mercury climbed above 30°C at most locations during the
week, temperatures were within 3°C of normal across the interior regions
of Queensland [WARM - 3 to 6 weeks].
13. Southwestern Australia:
STILL UNSEASONABLY COOL
Weekly departures of -3°C to -6°C dominated Western Australia and
South Australia, with the mercury dropping below 5°C at Kyancutta,
Australia (33°S) [COLD - 2 to 3 weeks].
