2. Southeastern Canada:
UNUSUALLY WARM CONDITIONS DEVELOP
Temperatures averaged 6°C to 10°C above normal in Labrador and
northern Quebec, with the mercury soaring above 35°C as far north as
Goose Bay, Newfoundland. Weekly departures of +3°C to +6°C prevailed
across the remainder of Quebec and the Canadian Maritime Provinces [WARM
- 2 to 11 weeks].
3. Northeastern United States:
MORE VERY DRY WEATHER
Although 10 to 50 mm of rain fell on the mid-Atlantic, the St. Lawrence
River Valley, and northern New England, short-term (May 1 - June 26) moisture
shortages ranged from 75 to 170 mm across the region [DRY - 4 to 14 weeks].
4. Western Venezuela:
MOISTURE SHORTAGES PERSIST
Scattered showers dropped as much as 50 mm on western Venezuela, but only
130 to 290 mm fell on the country since May 1, resulting in moisture shortages
of 140 to 355 mm [DRY - 6 to 7 weeks].
5. Southwestern Bolivia:
COLD POCKETS REMAIN
Temperatures were 1°C to 4°C below normal during the week, with
lows reaching -16°C at high altitude locations such as Oruro (18°S)
[COLD - Ending at 3 to 5 weeks].
6. East-Central Europe:
HEAVY RAINS CAUSE FLOODING
Strong thunderstorms drenched much of Hungary, Slovakia, and southern Poland
with heavy rains (30 to 90 mm), causing rivers to overflow. According to
media reports, houses and roads were submerged, bridges washed away, and
power supplies were cut [Episodic Events].
7. Eastern Europe and Turkey:
WARMTH REMAINS
Temperatures again averaged 2°C to 9°C above normal from Finland
and the northwestern corner of Russia southward to the Mediterranean. Temperatures
reached as high as 33°C at Moscow, Russia (56°N) and 40°C at
Sanliurfa, Turkey (37°N) [WARM - 2 to 4 weeks].
8. Northeastern Africa and Southwestern Asia:
WARM ANOMALY PERSISTS
Temperatures were 2°C to 7°C above normal from eastern Libya eastward
into Saudi Arabia. The mercury climbed as high as 42°C at Hassakah,
Syria (36°N) [WARM - 2 to 14 weeks].
9. Western Sahel:
ABOVE-NORMAL TEMPERATURES PERSIST
Although temperatures were within 3°C of normal, readings climbed above
40°C across Mauritania, northern and central Mali, and the northern
portions of Burkina Faso and Niger. Highs ranged from 30°C to 39°C
elsewhere [WARM - 2 to 14 weeks].
10. Sub-Saharan Sahel Region of Central Africa:
SHORT-TERM MOISTURE DEFICITS REPORTED
Fewer than 50 mm of rain fell on most locations as seasonal rains were
delayed. Exceptions include the northern portions of Togo and Benin, east-central
Sudan, and northwestern Ethiopia, where up to 100 mm were reported. Since
the beginning of May, moisture shortages of 50 to 100 mm were reported,
with larger precipitation shortfalls (100 to 310 mm) in Togo and Benin
[DRY - 4 to 10 weeks].
11. Southern South Africa:
STILL VERY DRY
Little or no rain fell during the past week, but moisture deficits since
the beginning of May were less than 100 mm [DRY - 4 to 9 weeks].
12. Central Asia:
COLD AIR SHIFTS SOUTHWARD
Temperatures averaged 3°C to 4°C below normal across much of Kazakhstan
for the third consecutive week while weekly departures of -2°C to -3°C
prevailed throughout Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Lows plummeted
to 4°C as far south as at Termez, Uzbekistan (37°N) [COLD - 2 to
3 weeks].
13. Central India:
COLD ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Unseasonably cool conditions, with weekly departures of -2°C to -5°C,
prevailed over the central Indian states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra,
and Orissa [COLD - 2 weeks].
