1. Southern Alberta:
NEAR-NORMAL TEMPERATURES PREVAIL
Temperatures returned to more seasonable values and the mercury remained
above 0°C throughout the region [COLD - Ending at 2 to 5 weeks].
2. South-Central United States:
UNSEASONABLY COOL CONDITIONS REPORTED
Temperatures were 1°C to 4°C below normal across the region last
week, and the mercury dropped below 20°C as far south as southwestern
Texas [COLD - 2 weeks].
3. Mid-Atlantic:
VERY DRY CONDITIONS PERSIST
Although as much as 200 mm of rain fell at some locations, the precipitation
has been spotty. Yet many areas have received less than 100 mm of rain
since the beginning of June, yielding moisture shortages of 100 to 150
mm [DRY - 7 to 18 weeks].
4. Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada:
WARM CONDITIONS DOMINATE
Temperatures averaged 3°C to 6°C above normal across the Corn Belt
from eastern Nebraska eastward to the central Appalachians. The media indicated
that the extreme heat in southern Ohio resulted in several deaths during
the weekend. In addition, weekly departures of +3°C to +6°C covered
much of western Ontario and northeastern Manitoba. Readings were within
3°C of normal across the remainder of the region. Highs ranged from
30°C to 37°C across most of the northeastern United States, southern
Ontario, and northeastern Manitoba [WARM - 2 to 15 weeks].
5. West-Central South America:
COLD ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Weekly departures of -3°C to -6°C dominated southern Paraguay,
northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina, with lows plummeting below
freezing as far north as west-central Bolivia [COLD - 2 to 4 weeks].
6. East-Central South America:
WET WEATHER ABATES
Light to moderate rains (10 to 50 mm) fell on Uruguay while little or no
precipitation was measured in east-central Argentina. Since the beginning
of June, moisture excesses of 100 to 300 mm have accumulated across Uruguay,
but short-term surpluses were below 100 mm elsewhere [WET - 4 to 9 weeks].
7. Southeastern Europe:
WETNESS ABATES
Thunderstorms brought moderate rains (20 to 40 mm) to much of Slovakia
and parts of Hungary and Romania while light rain dampened the remainder
of the region. According to media accounts, flooding late in the previous
week in northeastern Hungary destroyed residences, bridges, and crops and
caused a half dozen deaths [WET - 4 to 11 weeks].
8. Europe and Turkey:
WARMTH REMAINS
The warm anomaly continued from the northwestern corner of Russia southward
across western Turkey and over the Baltic Sea littoral. Temperatures
again averaged 2°C to 6°C above normal over the region with temperatures
reaching as high as 42°C at Sanliurfa, Turkey (37°N) [WARM - 2
to 10 weeks].
9. Northeastern Africa and Southwestern Asia:
HIGH TEMPERATURES DOMINATE THE REGION
The mercury soared above 40°C at most interior locations of Saudi Arabia,
Egypt, and eastern Libya, but most weekly departures were within 3°C
of normal [WARM - 2 to 4 weeks].
10. Southern Africa:
UNSEASONABLY MILD WEATHER DOMINATES
Temperatures were generally within 3°C of normal, but readings exceeded
30°C across the south-central portion of Eastern Cape state in South
Africa [WARM - 3 to 5 weeks].
11. Pakistan and Northwestern India:
DRYNESS CONTINUES
Little or no rain fell on the Punjab states of India and Pakistan and western
Rajasthan in India. Since the first of June, as little as 40 to 85 mm has
fallen over much of the area, which is 100 to 250 mm less than normal [DRY
- 4 to 7 weeks].
12. Northeastern Asia:
WARMTH DEVELOPS
Temperatures averaged 5°C to 9°C above normal over Mongolia and
3°C to 7°C across Manchuria and south central and southeastern
Siberia . Temperatures climbed as high as 41°C at Sainshand,
Mongolia (45°N) and Kjahta, Russia (50°N) [WARM - 2 to 5 weeks].
13. Japan:
RAINS EASE
Light to moderate rains (10 to 50 mm) fell across most of Honshu,
providing some relief from the very heavy rains of previous weeks. Since
the start of June, 400 to 800 mm has fallen over much of the island, which
is 150 to 400 mm more than normal [WET - 5 to 7 weeks].
14. East-Central China and the Korean Peninsula:
DRYNESS DEVELOPS
Little or no rain fell on southern North Korea and much of Shandong
and Jiangsu Provinces of east-central China. Between 40 and 190 mm has
fallen over the region since June 1, yielding moisture deficits of 140
to 220 mm [DRY - 4 to 5 weeks].
15. Southern China:
THUNDERSTORMS BRING MORE HEAVY RAIN
Thunderstorms soaked much of southern China from Yunnan eastward to Fujian
and Zhejiang with moderate to heavy rains (20 to 130 mm). Since the
start of June, 400 to 1050 mm has fallen in the region, which is 150 to
680 mm above normal [WET - 4 to 10 weeks].
16. East-Central Australia:
A RELATIVELY DRY WEEK
Between 25 and 100 mm of rain fell on southeastern Queensland, but little
or none was reported elsewhere. Precipitation surpluses since the beginning
of June ranged from 100 to 485 mm along the coast [WET - 4 to 8 weeks].
17. Victoria, Australia:
WARM ANOMALY DIMINISHES
Temperatures were within 3°C of normal at most locations; however,
weekly departures approached +7°C while the mercury climbed to 23.2°C
at both Maryborough (25.5°S) and Lismore (28.8°S) [WARM - Ending
at 3 to 4 weeks].
