1. Northwestern Canada:
COLD ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Weekly departures of -3°C to -6°C dominated northeastern Alaska,
the Yukon, and the western North West Territories, with lows plummeting
to 1°C at Inuvik, NWT (68°N) [COLD - 2 weeks].
2. Southwestern United States:
UNSEASONABLY COOL CONDITIONS REPORTED
Temperatures were 2°C to 4°C below normal across California last
week, with the mercury dropping to 11°C at Stockton, California [COLD
- 2 weeks].
3. Mid-Atlantic United States:
VERY DRY CONDITIONS PERSIST
Although as much as 50 mm of rain fell at scattered locations, much of
the area received no rain. The dry conditions were exacerbated by the hot
weather (see 4 below). Many areas have received less than 100
mm of rain since the beginning of June, yielding moisture shortages of
100 to 150 mm [DRY - 8 to 19 weeks].
4. Eastern United States and Southeastern Canada:
EXTREME HEAT PREVAILS
Temperatures averaged 5°C to 13°C above normal across the Corn
Belt and 3°C to 7°C above normal across most of the remainder of
the eastern half of the United States. In addition, weekly departures
of +3°C to +9°C covered much of southeastern Canada. Highs
reached over 40°C in the middle Mississippi Valley and Southeast and
ranged from 30°C to 39°C across the remainder of the eastern United
States and parts of southern Ontario. The media indicated that the extreme
heat resulted in dozens of deaths in the Corn Belt and mid-Atlantic.
Cooler air, however, began moving into the western portions of the region
at week's end [WARM - 3 to 16 weeks].
5. Southern Brazil:
WETNESS CONTINUES
Thunderstorms brought moderate to heavy rains (20 to 100 mm) to much of
Rio Grande do Sul and parts of Santa Catarina. Since the beginning
of June, moisture excesses of 100 to 200 mm have accumulated across the
region [WET - 5 weeks].
6. Southeastern Europe:
WETNESS REMAINS
Abundant rains (25 to 90 mm) soaked much of Yugoslavia while moderate rain
was scattered across the remainder of the region. Since the start of June,
250 to 400 mm was fallen over parts of the area which are excesses of 130
to 250 mm [WET - 5 to 12 weeks].
7. Eastern Europe and West Central Asia:
WARMTH SHIFTS SOUTHEASTWARD
The warm anomaly over eastern Europe the previous week moved southeastward
across the Caucasus and into the middle East. Temperatures averaged
2°C to 8°C above normal over the region with temperatures reaching
as high as 39°C at Orenburg, Russia (52°N) and 43°C at Sanliurfa,
Turkey (37°N) [WARM - 2 to 9 weeks].
8. Southern Africa:
UNSEASONABLY MILD WEATHER MODERATES
Temperatures were generally within 3°C of normal, but readings exceeded
30°C across the southern portions of Eastern Cape state in South Africa
[WARM - Ending at 4 to 6 weeks].
9. Pakistan and Northwestern India:
SCATTERED RAINS EASE DRYNESS
Scattered moderate to heavy rain (25 to 80 mm) brought relief to dryness
in parts of the Punjab states of India and Pakistan and western Rajasthan
in India. Little or no rain, however, fell on the remainder
of the region. Since the first of June, as little as 40 to 85 mm
has fallen over parts of the area which is 150 to 250 mm less than normal
[DRY - 5 to 8 weeks].
10. East Central Asia:
WARM ANOMALY DROPS SOUTHWARD
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 5°C above normal across south central
and southeastern Siberia 3°C to 7°C above normal over Mongolia
southeastward to Japan. Temperatures climbed to as high as 40°C
at Mandalgovi, Mongolia (46°N) and 41°C at Erenhot, China
(44°N) [WARM - 2 to 6 weeks].
11. East Central China:
RAINS EASE DRYNESS
Moderate to heavy rain (20 to 90 mm) eased dryness in parts of China's
Provinces of Shandong, Jiangsu and Anhui. Between 40 to 150 mm has fallen
over parts the region since June 1, yielding moisture deficits of
150 to 220 mm [DRY - Ending at 5 to 6 weeks].
12. Southern China:
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS BRING HEAVY RAIN
Thunderstorms soaked much of Fujian with heavy rain (50 to 140 mm) while
lighter and more scattered amounts (10 to 75 mm) dampened the remainder
of the region. Since June 1st, 500 to 1100 mm has fallen in the region
