Temperatures averaged 6°C to 14°C below normal across western and
central Alaska, with lows dropping below -20°C throughout the state,
and approaching -48°C at McGrath (63°N) [COLD - Up to 6 weeks].
2. California:
MOISTURE SHORTAGES GROW
Little or no precipitation occurred across the state again last week, and
8-week moisture deficits of 100 to 200 mm dominated much of northern and
coastal California [DRY - Up to 7 weeks].
3. Northeastern United States:
DRY ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Although 25 to 125 mm of precipitation fell on the Ohio Valley and scattered
portions of New England, the remainder of the country from the Missouri
eastward to the Atlantic Seaboard received fewer than 25 mm. During the
past 8 weeks, moisture deficits of 50 to 100 mm accumulated across the
region, with shortages exceeding 100 mm along the Atlantic Coast [DRY -
Up to 9 weeks].
4. Northern Colombia and Western Venezuela:
WET WEATHER ABATES
Although scattered moderate to heavy showers (25 to locally over 100 mm)
soaked parts of Colombia, most areas received less than 30 mm of rain.
Meanwhile, 8-week moisture excesses of 200 to more than 600 mm persisted
in most of northern Colombia and extreme northwestern Venezuela [WET -
Up to 9 weeks].
5. East-Central South America:
ABNORMALLY DRY CONDITIONS DOMINATE
Little or no rain fell on Uruguay, extreme southern Brazil (Rio Grande
do Sul), and adjacent parts of northeastern Argentina, except for light
to moderate showers (10 to 50 mm) in southern Buenos Aires province. Short-term
(8-week) precipitation totals were generally less than 100 mm, resulting
in shortfalls of 100 to 210 mm [DRY - Up to 18 weeks].
6. Western Europe:
RELATIVELY DRY WEATHER PREVAILS
Moderate precipitation (25 to 100 mm) fell on the windward portions of
Ireland and Great Britain while fewer than 25 mm dampened the remainder
of the British Isles. Light precipitation (10 to 25 mm) also fell on the
Benelux Countries and northwestern France, but little or none was reported
elsewhere in France. During the last 8 weeks, 100 to 400 mm of precipitation
soaked the region, yielding moisture excesses of 100 to 200 mm [WET - Up
to 8 weeks].
7. Turkey and Southeastern Europe:
WET CONDITIONS EASE
Little or no precipitation fell on southeastern Europe while weekly totals
of 10 to 50 mm were reported in northwestern Turkey [WET - Up to 6 weeks].
8. Middle East:
WARMTH CONTINUES
Temperatures averaged 6°C to 8°C above normal across Iran while
weekly departures of +3°C to +6°C dominated southeastern Turkey
and eastern Syria. Temperatures were within 3°C of normal elsewhere.
Readings climbed as high as 19°C at Hassakah, Syria (36°N) and
22°C at Zahedan, Iran (29°N) [WARM - Up to 4 weeks].
9. Southeastern Africa:
TEMPERATURES MODERATE
Weekly departures ranged from +1°C to +3°C, with the larger departures
reported in Mozambique. The mercury soared above 30°C across the region,
except for higher elevations of northeastern South Africa [WARM - Up to
8 weeks].
10. Southern Africa:
SHORT-TERM MOISTURE SURPLUSES REMAIN
Light to moderate rains (10 to 50 mm) dampened the eastern half of South
Africa while fewer than 25 mm were recorded in central and southern Namibia,
southwestern Botswana, and western South Africa. Precipitation excesses
for the past 8 weeks generally ranged from 100 to 400 mm [WET - Up to 9
weeks].
11. Northern India:
UNUSUALLY COLD CONDITIONS REPORTED
Temperatures were 3°C to 5°C below normal across much of northern
India, with the mercury dropping to 1°C at Gaya (25°N). According
to media reports, the cold wave caused many deaths [COLD - Up to 2 weeks].
12. Central Russia:
COLD ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Weekly departures of -6°C to -21°C dominated central Siberia, with
lows plummeting to -50°C at Kirensk (58°N) [COLD - Up to
2 weeks].
13. Japan:
DRYNESS PREVAILS
Scattered moderate precipitation (20 to 50 mm) eased dryness in parts of
the islands of Kyushu, Shikoku, and southern Honshu, but most of the area
received little or none. Precipitation shortfalls during the last 8 weeks
ranged from 50 to 200 mm [DRY - Up to 10 weeks].
14. Southeastern China:
DRYNESS CONTINUES
Little or no rain fell in the provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangdong,
and Guangxi. Short-term mositure deficits of 50 to 100 mm were reported
at most locations [DRY - Up to 6 weeks].
15. Australia:
UNSEASONABLY COOL WEATHER PERSISTS
Temperatures averaged 3°C to 5°C below normal in most of Western
Australia, southeastern South Australia, and northeastern New South Wales
while weekly departures of -1°C to -3°C prevailed elsewhere. Lows
reached 13°C as far north as Woomera (31°S), and the mercury failed
to reach 30°C at many locations in southeastern South Australia, eastern
and southern New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania [COLD - Up to 11 weeks].
