1. Alaska:
BITTERLY COLD WEATHER CONTINUES
Temperatures averaged 6°C to 14°C below normal across most of Alaska,
except for weekly departures of -3°C to -6°C across the southeastern
and southwestern portions of the state. Lows ranged from -20°C to -49°C
across the interior while highs failed to reach freezing along the southern
coast [COLD - Up to 7 weeks].
2. California:
MOISTURE DEFICITS REMAIN
Heavy precipitation (up to 275 mm) fell on northern California, but little
or none was observed elsewhere. During the past 8 weeks, only northern
California measured more than 25 mm, with widespread moisture deficits
of 50 to 100 mm accumulating across the state [DRY - Up to 8 weeks].
3. Gulf Coast:
UNUSUALLY DRY CONDITIONS DEVELOP
Little or no rain fell on the Gulf Coast from southern Texas eastward through
Florida. Short-term (8-week) deficits ranged from 50 to 140 mm throughout
the region [DRY - Up to 6 weeks].
4. Northeastern United States:
DRY ANOMALY PERSISTS
Although 25 to 100 mm of precipitation fell on North Carolina, the remainder
of the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic received fewer than 25 mm. Precipitation
totaled 100 to 200 mm during the past 8 weeks, but shortfalls of 50 to
150 mm accumulated at many locations [DRY - Up to 10 weeks].
5. Northern Colombia and Northwestern Venezuela:
WET WEATHER ABATES
Little or no rain fell on the region, except for isolated totals of 25
to 100 mm in Colombia. During the past 8 weeks, most of the region has
received over 100 mm of rain, resulting in excesses of 100 to over 500
mm [WET - Up to 10 weeks].
6. East-Central South America:
UNUSUALLY WARM CONDITIONS DEVELOP
Temperatures were 2°C to 4°C above normal across Uruguay and northeastern
Argentina, with the mercury soaring to above 40°C at a few locations,
and exceeding 30°C across the entire region [WARM - Up to 3 weeks].
7. Western Europe:
FAVORABLY DRY WEATHER CONTINUES
Between 25 and 50 mm of precipitation fell on Ireland, Wales, and northern
England while little or none was reported elsewhere. Short-term (8-week)
moisture excesses of 100 to 200 mm persisted across Ireland and Scotland
while precipitation surpluses of 50 to 100 mm prevailed elsewhere [WET
- Ending at 9 weeks].
8. Southwestern Europe and Northwestern Africa:
SUBNORMAL TEMPERATURES REPORTED
Weekly departures of -2°C to -4°C dominated the Iberian Peninsula
and northwestern Africa, with a few locations in Morocco and the Canary
Islands reporting departures as large as -5°C. Subfreezing temperatures
covered all of the Iberian Peninsula and the higher elevations of Morocco
and Algeria while highs failed to reach 20°C, except on the Canary
Islands and at isolated locations of west-central Morocco [COLD - Up to
2 weeks].
9. Southern Africa:
MORE HEAVY RAINS
Torrential rains (100 to 200 mm) drenched parts of Zimbabwe, northern and
eastern Botswana, northeastern Namibia, and eastern South Africa while
moderate to heavy rains (25 to 100 mm) soaked much of southern Africa from
central South Africa and northern Botswana eastward to the Indian Ocean.
Fewer than 30 mm of rain were reported elsewhere. During the past 8 weeks,
more than 100 mm of rain has fallen on the region, except for 25 to 50
mm across the western deserts of South Africa and southern Namibia. Moisture
surpluses of 100 to 260 mm accumulated in northeastern Namibia, western
Zimbabwe, and southeastern South Africa [WET - Up to 10 weeks].
10. South-Central Siberia, Eastern Mongolia, and Northeastern China:
COLD ANOMALY EXPANDS SOUTHWARD
Temperatures averaged 3°C to 7°C below normal around Lake Baykal
while lows ranged from -20°C to -51°C across south-central Siberia,
eastern Siberia, and interior northeastern China. Highs generally failed
to reach freezing north of 40°N [COLD - Up to 3 weeks].
11. Eastern Asia:
WARM ANOMALY SPREADS NORTHEASTWARD
Large weekly temperature departures dominated southeastern Siberia (+6°C
to +10°C), the Indochinese Peninsula (+3°C to +9°C), and the
southeastern and east-central sections of China (2°C to 7°C). Meanwhile,
temperatures were 2°C to 6°C above normal across Taiwan, the Ryukyu
Islands, and Japan. Highs soared above 20°C as far north as 40°N
in east-central China and generally climbed above freezing south of 50°N
in eastern China and throughout the Japanese Archipelago. Lows remained
above freezing south of 30°N in China and as far north as 35°N
in central Japan [WARM - Up to 3 weeks].
12. Western Australia:
NEAR-NORMAL TEMPERATURES PREVAIL
Temperatures were within 3°C of normal across Western Australia, with
highs generally exceeding 30°C across the region [COLD - Ending at
12 weeks].
13. Eastern Australia:
COLD POCKET REMAINS
Temperatures were 2°C to 6°C below normal across southern Queensland
