Weekly Global Climate Highlights Map for May 13, 2000

1. Southwestern United States:

HIGH TEMPERATURES EXACERBATE WILDFIRE CONDITIONS
Weekly departures of +2°C to +6°C dominated New Mexico and adjacent parts of Arizona and Texas. High temperatures, ranging from 30°C to 41°C, resulted in reduced relative humidity, which aggravated wildfire conditions across New Mexico [WARM - Up to 4 weeks].

2. East-Central South America:

FAVORABLY DRY WEATHER PREVAILS
Little or no rain fell on Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina, and extreme southern Brazil this past week, providing relief from abnormally wet weather. Short-term (8-week) precipitation totals ranged from 100 to 550 mm, yielding moisture excesses of 50 to 380 mm [WET - Ending at 9 weeks].

3. Western Europe:

MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINS RETURN
Wet weather returned to France and the northern Iberian Peninsula as 50 to 100 mm of rain soaked western France and totals of 10 to 50 mm prevailed elsewhere. Since mid-March precipitation totals (and departures) included 180 to 630 mm (+90 to +375 mm) in Portugal, 100 to 600 mm (+50 to +400 mm) in Spain, and 100 to 300 mm (+50 to +150 mm) in France [WET - Up to 8 weeks].

4. Europe:

AN EARLY-SEASON HEAT WAVE CONTINUES
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 6°C above normal across most of Europe, with departures reaching +7°C in parts of France. The mercury soared above 29°C as far north as 48°N, and exceeded 20°C across the entire region while lows remained above freezing, except at very high elevations [WARM - Up to 6 weeks].

5. Eastern Europe:

ABNORMALLY DRY CONDITIONS DOMINATE
Little or no rain fell on most of eastern Europe from western Poland and northern Yugoslavia eastward through western European Russia; however, 10 to 100 mm of rain dampened parts of Austria and isolated locations in southwestern Poland and the Czech Republic. Short-term (8-week) moisture deficits were generally below 100 mm, but reached as high as 160 mm in Austria, Hungary, and extreme northern Yugoslavia [DRY - Up to 6 weeks].

6. Western Africa:

HOT WEATHER PERSISTS
Weekly departures of +2°C to +5°C dominated Burkina Faso, Togo, and Benin, with highs ranging from 40°C to 45°C throughout Burkina Faso; however, highs remained below 40°C elsewhere [WARM - Up to 11 weeks].

7. Southern Africa:

TEMPERATURES MODERATE
Near-normal temperatures prevailed across the region; however, the mercury failed to reach 30°C at any location in the region while subfreezing lows were scattered at higher elevations across the region [COLD - Up to 3 weeks].

8. East-Central Africa:

PRECIPITATION DEFICITS CONTINUE TO GROW
Little or no rain fell on most of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania, with scattered thundershowers limited to the extreme western and southeastern portions of Kenya. Short-term precipitation shortfalls reached as high as 355 mm [DRY - Up to 16 weeks].

9. Western Asia:

A LATE-SEASON COLD SNAP
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 5°C below normal across the region, with subfreezing lows reaching as far south as 50°N, and dropping below -10°C at Vologda, Russia (59°N). The mercury failed to reach 20°C in most of western Asian Russia and western Kazakhstan [COLD - 2 weeks].

10. Northern Honshu, Japan:

UNUSUALLY WET CONDITIONS DEVELOP
Between 25 and 100 mm of rain fell on northern Honshu during the past week as a wet anomaly developed. Short-term moisture surpluses reached as high as 425 mm as a result of accumulations in the 200 to 650 mm range [WET - Up to 7 weeks].

11. East-Central Asia:

STILL VERY DRY
Moderate rains (25 to 50 mm) fell on southern Henan, southern Anhui, and east-central Jiangsu while fewer than 25 mm were reported elsewhere. Although as much as 400 mm of rain has fallen on some locations during the last 8-weeks, moisture deficits of 50 to 300 mm dominated the region [DRY - Up to 12 weeks].

12. Southeastern Asia:

MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINS CONTINUE
Torrential rains (100 to 500 mm) drenched extreme southern Vietnam and the southern and northeastern portions of Thailand while moderate to heavy rains (25 to 100 mm) fell elsewhere. Between 100 and 600 mm of rain has accumulated across Thailand during the last 8 weeks, yielding moisture excesses of 50 to 500 mm. Meanwhile, 100 to 400 mm of precipitation fell on Vietnam during the same 8-week period, with surpluses ranging from 90 to 130 mm [WET - Up to 17 weeks].

13. Australia:

WET WEATHER ENDS, MOISTURE SURPLUSES REMAIN
Little or no rain fell on the region last week as unusually wet conditions abated. Short-term precipitation surpluses remained in the 50 to 320 mm range [WET - Ended at 17 weeks].

14. Western Australia:

COOL CONDITIONS PERSIST
Subnormal temperatures, characterized by weekly departures of -1°C to -4°C, dominated Western Australia. Lows dropped below 9°C as far north as Learmouth (22°S) while highs failed to reach 30°C south of the Tropic of Capricorn [COLD - Up to 4 weeks].
