1. Central United States:
MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINS CONTINUE
Thunderstorms brought scattered moderate to heavy rain (20
to 125 mm) across Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and northern Oklahoma
while favorable dry conditions prevailed elsewhere in the region.
Precipitation totals of 100 to 300 mm for the last 8 weeks again prevailed,
allowing moisture excesses of up to 260 mm to accumulate [WET - Up to 21
weeks].
2. Southern United States and Northern Mexico:
COOLER AIR PUSHES SOUTHWARD
Temperatures returned to near normal across the southeastern
and south central United States bringing relief from the excessive heat
of previous weeks. Western Texas and northern Mexico, however, remained
hot as temperatures averaged 2°C to 4°C above normal with the mercury
soaring above 37°C at a number of locations [WARM - Up to 4 weeks].
3. Southern United States and Northern Mexico:
SHOWERS PROVIDE SOME RELIEF
Scattered moderate showers dropped 15 to 40 mm of rain on
the central Gulf Coast and eastern Texas, but little or none fell across
western Texas and northern Mexico. Precipitation totals of 20 to
200 mm since early June resulted in shortfalls of up to 230 mm in the United
States and up to 300 mm in Mexico. High temperatures (see item 2)
aggravated the very dry conditions in western Texas and northern Mexico
[DRY - Up to 16 weeks].
4. Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada:
UNSEASONABLY COOL CONDITIONS CONTINUE
Weekly departures of -2°C to -5°C prevailed over
the northern United States from the eastern Dakotas and central Nebraska
eastward to the Atlantic Seaboard, with readings dropping to as low 10°C
at Springfield, Illinois (40°N) [COLD - Up to 4 weeks].
5. Central South America:
ABNORMALLY COLD WEATHER REMAINS
Temperatures averaging 3°C to 8°C below normal dominated
southern Bolivia, Paraguay, extreme southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northeastern
Argentina. Subfreezing temperatures were reported at scattered locations
across the region [COLD - Up to 4 weeks].
6. Middle East and Northeastern Africa:
MORE HOT WEATHER
Extreme heat continued from Turkey and northern Iran southward
to northeastern Sudan and southern Saudi Arabia, with temperatures soaring
into the mid to upper 40's and averaging 2°C to 5°C above normal.
The mercury climbed as high as 48°C at Hassakah, Syria (37°N) [WARM
- Up to 5 weeks].
7. Western African Sahel:
DRYNESS CONTINUES
Little or no rain fell on Senegal and southern Mali as eight
week moisture deficits of 80 to 190 mm were reported [DRY - Up to 9 weeks].
8. Northeastern China:
DRYNESS PREVAILS
Scattered thunderstorms spread light to moderate rain (up
to 30 mm) across central Nei Mongol, but little or no rain fell on much
of the region. Less than 150 mm of rain has fallen since early June,
yielding moisture shortages of up to 200 mm [DRY - Up to 13 weeks].
9. East Central and northeastern Asia:
WARMTH SHIFTS EASTWARD
Weekly departures of +2°C to +4°C prevailed over
far eastern Siberia, Japan, and the southern Korean Peninsula. Temperatures
reached as high as 38°C at Kumgaya, Japan (36°N) [WARM - Up to
8 weeks].
