1. Southwestern United States:
HIGH TEMPERATURES CONTINUE
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 4°C above normal across California,
western and southern Nevada, and most of Arizona, with highs of 30°C
to 39°C across much of the Southwest. Subfreezing lows were limited
to northern Nevada and a few high elevations of Arizona [WARM - Up to 12
weeks].
2. South-Central United States:
ABNORMALLY DRY WEATHER PERSISTS
Little or no rain fell on the central and southern Great Plains, except
for a few moderate showers (25 to 50 mm) in central Texas. During the last
8 weeks, the region has received less than 100 mm of rain, resulting in
precipitation shortfalls of 50 to 200 mm [DRY - Up to 26 weeks].
3. Midwestern United States:
VERY WET CONDITIONS DOMINATE
Moderate to heavy precipitation (25 to 130 mm) soaked the Midwest from
northern Missouri northeastward to western New York, with some areas receiving
snow at the end of the week. Lesser amounts (10 to 25 mm) were reported
along the fringes of the region. Between 180 and 310 mm of precipitation
has fallen on the region since mid-August, allowing short-term moisture
excesses to reach 50 to 170 mm [WET - Up to 6 weeks].
4. Mid-Atlantic States:
NEAR-NORMAL TEMPERATURES PREVAIL
Temperatures were within 3°C above normal; however, cold Canadian air
returned to the region at the end of the week [COLD - Up to 3 weeks].
5. Southeastern Florida:
HEAVY RAINS INUNDATE MIAMI METROPOLITAN AREA
Up to 450 mm of rain drenched Miami and the surrounding area during the
past week. The heavy rains forced many schools and businesses to close,
according to press reports [Episodic Event].
6. Southern South America:
RAINS ABATE IN THE WEST, INTENSIFY IN THE EAST
Fewer than 25 mm of rain fell on Chile and western Argentina. Farther east,
50 to 200 mm of rain drenched Buenos Aires, La Pampa, and Cordoba provinces
of east-central Argentina while 25 to 50 mm fell on Uruguay. During the
past 8 weeks, 100 to 400 mm of rain has fallen on the region, yielding
moisture excesses of 50 to 150 mm [WET - Up to 8 weeks].
7. East-Central Argentina:
COLD POCKETS REMAIN
Near-normal temperatures returned to southern and central South America,
but weekly departures of -2°C to -4°C continued to dominate Buenos
Aires province of east-central Argentina. The mercury failed to reach 20°C
along the coastal regions of Buenos Aires province and remained below 30°C
elsewhere; however, subfreezing lows were restricted to the Andes [COLD
- Up to 8 weeks].
8. British Isles:
MORE WET WEATHER
Moderate to heavy rains (50 to 100 mm) fell on the windward sections of
Great Britain while totals of 25 to 50 mm prevailed across western Ireland
and western and central Great Britain. The leeward (eastern) portions of
the British Isles received only 10 to 25 mm of rain. During the last 8
weeks, precipitation totals (departures) ranged from 150 to 350 mm (+50
to +110 mm) [WET - Up to 6 weeks].
9. Northern Europe:
STILL VERY DRY
Fewer than 30 mm of precipitation were recorded across Finland and adjacent
portions of northwestern European Russia and the Baltics. During the last
8 weeks, the region has received less than 125 mm of precipitation, allowing
mositure shortages of 50 to 200 mm to accumulate [DRY - Up to 10 weeks].
10. Eastern Asia:
WARM ANOMALY DOMINATES REGION
Unusually warm conditions, characterized by positive weekly temperature
departures, prevailed across eastern Siberia (+2°C to +6°C), the
northeastern quadrant of China (+2°C to +5°C), and eastern Mongolia
(+2°C to +4°C) while temperatures were 2°C to 3°C above
normal in Japan and Korea. Highs reached 20°C as far north as 45°N
in Mongolia and northeastern China while the mercury climbed above 30°C
as far north as 30°N in southern China. Subfreezing lows, however,
prevailed as far south as 40°N in northeastern China and North Korea
[WARM - Up to 18 weeks].
11. Northern Japan:
HEAVY RAINS ABATE
Precipitation totals of 25 to 50 mm were recorded across Hokkaido, with
isolated heavier amounts (up to 100 mm) on the west-central portion of
the island. Since the middle of August, 300 to 625 mm of rain has drenched
Hokkaido, resulting in moisture excesses of 50 to 350 mm [WET - Up to 7
weeks].
12. Southeastern China:
SCATTERED HEAVY SHOWERS BRING LIMITED RELIEF
Widely scattered moderate to heavy rains (50 to 200 mm) fell on parts of
Guangdong and Fujian while most areas in southeastern China received fewer
than 25 mm of rain. The largest 8-week precipitation shortfalls (100 to
320 mm) prevailed across Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan, but short-term
moisture deficits were less than 100 mm elsewhere [DRY - Up to 9 weeks].
13. East-Central Australia:
EARLY-SEASON HEAT CONTINUES
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 5°C above normal across most of Australia,
with highs soaring above 40°C in northern Western Australia, and climbing
above 30°C throughout the interior of the country. Subfreezing lows
were restricted to the higher elevations of Tasmania and the Great Dividing
Range [DRY - 9 weeks].
14. Australia:
VERY DRY CONDITIONS DEVELOP
Little or no rain fell on southeastern Queensland and northeastern New
South Wales as unusually dry weather prevailed. High temperatures aggravated
the abnormally dry conditions across the region [WARM - Up to 4 weeks].
