1. Western United States:
SHORT-TERM MOISTURE DEFICITS GROW
Although 50 to 125 mm of precipitation fell on parts of western Washington
and northwestern Oregon, only light to moderate amounts were observed across
the rest of the region. Between October 8 and December 2, only 100 to 400
mm of precipitation was reported, resulting in precipitation shortfalls
of 50 to 250 mm [DRY - Up to 7 weeks].
2. South-Central United States:
SHORT-TERM MOISTURE SURPLUSES REMAIN
Little or no rain has fallen on the region during the past week, providing
relief from recent wetness, but exacerbating long-term dryness (see
U. S. Drought Monitor for details). Precipitation totals for the last
8 weeks ranged from 200 to 400 mm, allowing short-term moisture surpluses
of 50 to 280 mm to persist [WET - Up to 10 weeks].
3. Eastern United States:
COLD ANOMALY MODERATES
Temperatures were 1°C to 3°C below normal, with subfreezing lows
as far south as the central Gulf Coast. Readings plummeted below -10°C
across most of Pennsylvania while highs above 20°C were restricted
to the Gulf Coast states [COLD - Up to 5 weeks].
4. Northern Argentina:
WET WEATHER RETURNS
Moderate to heavy rains (50 to 200 mm) drenched northern Argentina from
central Cordoba northward to southern Chaco. Between 150 and 660 mm of
precipitation has fallen on the region since October 8, with short-term
moisture surpluses ranging from 50 to 360 mm [WET - Up to 9 weeks].
5. Western Europe:
WETNESS EASES
Drier weather prevailed over western Europe, with storms bringing moderate
to occasional heavy rain (25 to 120 mm) to Ireland, western England, western
France, northern Spain, northern Portugal, and northern Italy. During the
last 8 weeks, 100 to 550 mm has fallen over the area (higher amounts
in the Alps), allowing moisture excesses of 60 to 320 mm to accumulate
[WET - Up to 14 weeks].
6. Europe:
MILD WEATHER PERSISTS
Temperature departures of +4°C to +8°C again prevailed over most
of central and western Europe extending from northern Spain and northern
Italy northward to southern Sweden. Temperatures climbed to as high as
21°C at Mont-de-Marsan, France (44°N) [WARM - Up to 11 weeks].
7. Southeastern Europe:
DRYNESS CONTINUES OVER MUCH OF REGION
Little or no rain again fell across much of the region from the Ukraine
and southern European Russia southward to Turkey and Greece. Storms, however,
brought moderate to heavy rains of 25 to 125 mm to eastern Bulgaria and
western Turkey. Since October 8, moisture deficits of 50 to 170 mm have
dominated most of the area [DRY - Up to 18 weeks].
8. Southern Africa:
WETNESS CONTINUES
Moderate to heavy rains (25 to 140 mm) soaked all but the southeastern
corner of Zimbabwe. Moisture surpluses during the last eight weeks of 70
to 220 mm have accumulated over most of the nation [WET - Up to 8
weeks].
9. Southern Siberia:
COLD WEATHER PERSISTS
Cold weather continued in southeastern Siberia, eastern Kazakhstan and
northern Mongolia. Temperatures averaged 4°C to 15°C below normal,
with the mercury plunging to -52°C at Tura, Russia (64°N) [COLD
- Up to 8 weeks].
10. Eastern Australia:
A FAVORABLY DRY WEEK
Light to moderate rains (10 to 50 mm) were limited to the eastern half
of New South Wales, with isolated heavier amounts (up to 200 mm) reported
along the coasts of Queensland and New South Wales. Meanwhile, little or
no precipitation fell on the remainder of the region. During the past 8
weeks, the region received 100 to 510 mm of rain, resulting in short-term
moisture excesses of 50 to 400 mm [WET - Up to 10 weeks].
11. Southeastern Australia:
EARLY-SEASON HEAT WAVE CONTINUES
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 4°C above normal across New South
Wales, Victoria, and eastern South Australia, with weekly departures of
+5°C to +6°C reported in north-central Victoria. The mercury soared
above 40°C in northwestern New South Wales and parts of South Australia
while readings climbed above 30°C across the remainder of South Australia,
New South Wales, and interior Victoria. Lows remained above freezing throughout
the region, except in the highest elevations of the Great Dividing Range
[WARM - Up to 4 weeks].
