Weekly Global Climate Highlights Map for December 9, 2000

1. Western United States and Southwestern Canada:

ABNORMALLY DRY CONDITIONS PREVAIL
Little or no precipitation fell on the region, including orographically-favored areas, during the past week. Since the middle of October, precipitation has totaled 60 to 370 mm, resulting in 8-week shortfalls of 70 to 300 mm [DRY - Up to 8 weeks].

2. Eastern United States:

STILL UNUSUALLY COLD
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 6°C below normal again last week, with subfreezing lows dominating the entire region, except along the immediate Gulf Coast. Readings above 20°C were restricted to Florida, southern Alabama, and southern Georgia [COLD - Up to 6 weeks].

3. Northern Argentina:

WET WEATHER ABATES
Only light rains (10 to 25 mm) dampened Entre Rios, Santa Fe, and Santiago Del Estero provinces of northern Argentina while moderate precipitation (25 to 50 mm) fell on Cordoba. Since October 15, the region has received 100 to 500 mm of rain, allowing short-term moisture excesses of 50 to 250 mm to accumulate [WET - Up to 10 weeks].

4. Western Europe and Northwestern Africa:

WARM ANOMALY EXPANDS
Temperature departures of +5°C to +10°C dominated much of western Europe, Morocco and northwestern Algeria, with the mercury soaring to 21°C at Feldkirch, Austria (47°N) [WARM - Up to 12 weeks].

5. Western Europe:

WETNESS CONTINUES IN PARTS OF REGION
Storms brought moderate to heavy rain (25 to 140 mm) to the British Isles, northwestern France, northwestern Spain, Portugal, and parts of northern Italy, with very heavy amounts (up to 250 mm) drenching northern Portugal and extreme western Spain.  Dry weather prevailed over the remainder of the region. During the last 8 weeks, 150 to 520 mm has soaked much of the area (higher amounts in the higher elevations) yielding moisture surpluses of 60 to 230 mm [WET - Up to 15 weeks].

6. Southeastern Europe:

DRYNESS CONTINUES
Little or no rain fell across the region from Slovakia, Ukraine and southern European Russia southward to Turkey and Greece.  Since the middle of October, moisture deficits of 50 to 200 mm have accumulated in most of the area [DRY - Up to 19 weeks].

7. Southern Siberia:

COLD WEATHER CONTINUES
Bitterly cold weather dominated southern Siberia, northern Kazakhstan, extreme northeastern China, and northern Japan, with temperatures averaging 4°C to 17°C below normal. The mercury plunged to -51°C at Erbogacen, Russia (61°N) [COLD - Up to 9 weeks].

8. Northeastern Australia:

ANOTHER FAVORABLY DRY WEEK
Little or no rain fell on most of Queensland and New South Wales, except for 10 to 50 mm in northeastern and east-central New South Wales and southeastern Queensland. In sharp contrast, 100 to 200 mm of rain drenched coastal Queensland at the base of the Cape York Peninsula. Despite the dry weather, between 100 and 500 mm of rain has fallen on the region since the middle of October, allowing precipitation surpluses of 100 to 325 mm to dominate north-central New South Wales and much of Queensland [WET - Up to 11 weeks].

9. Southern Australia:

HEAT WAVE CONTINUES
Weekly departures of +2°C to +4°C prevailed across the region, with locally higher departures to +7°C in northeastern South Australia. Highs exceeded 40°C at some interior locations of South Australia while readings of 30°C to 39°C dominated the remainder of the region [WARM - Up to 5 weeks].

10. Victoria, Australia:

DRY ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Little or no rain has fallen on Victoria this past week, with central and western parts of the province experiencing their third consecutive dry week [DRY - Up to 6 weeks].
