1. Southwestern Canada and Northwestern United States:
PRECIPITATION DEFICITS PERSIST
Moderate to heavy precipitation (25 to 100 mm) was observed across much
of the region, with locally higher amounts (up to 150 mm) reported at higher
elevations. Although 100 to 300 mm of rain and/or snow accumulated during
the last 8 weeks, precipitation shortfalls of 50 to 250 mm dominated coastal
sections of British Columbia, Washington, and northern Oregon [DRY - Up
to 13 weeks].
2. Central and Southern United States:
MORE VERY WET WEATHER
Moderate to heavy rains (50 to 200 mm) fell on much of the South from eastern
Texas eastward to the Atlantic Seaboard, with the largest totals reported
in parts of Georgia and Alabama. Meanwhile, 25 to 100 mm of precipitation
was reported in central and eastern Kansas, northern Missouri, southeastern
Iowa, and northern Illinois. Since January 21, the region has received
100 to 370 mm of precipitation, allowing short-term moisture surpluses
of 50 to 170 mm to accumulate. See the U.
S. Drought Monitor for details on longer-term moisture deficits [WET
- Up to 9 weeks].
3. Florida:
ABNORMALLY DRY CONDITIONS DOMINATE
In sharp contrast to the remainder of the South, central and southern Florida
received little or no rain, except for isolated showers of up to 50 mm
along the eastern coast. Fewer than 125 mm of rain has fallen on the region
since January 21, allowing precipitation shortfalls of 50 to 125 mm to
accumulate. See the U.
S. Drought Monitor for more details [DRY - Up to 13 weeks].
4. Central South America:
MORE LATE-SEASON HEAT
Temperatures averaging 2°C to 4°C above normal dominated the region,
with weekly departures reaching +5°C in Uruguay and approaching +6°C
in parts of Argentina. Highs ranged from 30°C to 39°C across Paraguay,
Uruguay, and northern Argentina, while the mercury remained above 20°C
in Paraguay and interior northern Argentina [WARM - Up to 9 weeks].
5. Mediterranean Basin:
WARM ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Temperature departures of +3°C to +5°C again prevailed over an
area extending from southern Spain and northern Morocco eastward to southern
Turkey and northern Iraq. The mercury soared to 34°C at El Oued, Algeria
(34°N) [WARM - Up to 3 weeks].
6. Southern Africa:
MORE HEAVY RAIN
Storms soaked much of Zimbabwe and parts of Mozambique with moderate to
heavy rain (25 to 100 mm). During the last 8 weeks, 225 to 975 mm
has drenched the region, resulting in moisture surpluses of 60 to 580 mm
[WET - Up to 8 weeks].
7. Central China:
WARMTH PERSISTS
Temperature departures of +2°C to +6°C dominated central China
from Sichuan Province northeastward to Shanxi and Henan. Readings
reached as high as 25°C at Yuncheng (35°N) [WARM - Up to 7 weeks].
8. Philippines:
HEAVY RAIN DOUSES CENTRAL PHILIPPINES
Dry weather prevailed over most of northern and central Luzon, but thunderstorms
soaked parts of the central islands with heavy rain (50 to 225 mm). Since
January 21st, between 150 to 1050 mm has fallen on the islands, generating
moisture excesses of 100 to 410 mm [WET - Up to 7 weeks].
9. Western Australia:
FAVORABLY DRY WEATHER CONTINUES
Little or no rain fell on Western Australia except for 25 to 100 mm across
the extreme northern sections of the province. Between 100 and 750 mm of
rain has fallen on Western Australia during the past 8 weeks, yielding
moisture surpluses of 100 to 200 mm in most of the province, and 200 to
520 mm in the extreme northern sections [WET - Ending at 6 weeks].
