1. Central United States:
STILL UNUSUALLY DRY
Between 50 to 100 mm of rain brought limited relief to central Missouri,
and 25 to 50 mm of precipitation dampened southeastern Michigan and the
central and eastern portions of Ohio. Meanwhile, the remainder of the region
received little or no rain as dryness dominated the early stages of the
growing season. Please see the United
States Drought Monitor for more complete details [DRY - Up to 6 weeks].
2. Eastern United States:
HEAVY RAINS IN SOUTHEAST; LIGHT PRECIPITATION ELSEWHERE
Moderate to heavy rains (50 to 200 mm) fell on northeastern Mississippi,
central Alabama, and west-central Georgia; but fewer than 50 mm were reported
elsewhere. Parts of the South reported short-term (8-week) moisture excesses
of more than 50 mm; however, long-term moisture deficits persist. Please
see the United States
Drought Monitor for more complete details [WET - Up to 12 weeks].
3. Southern and Eastern United States:
COLD ANOMALY DIMINISHES
Temperatures were within 3°C of normal across the region. Subfreezing
lows, however, penetrated as far south as southern Virginia and the higher
elevations of western North Carolina. The mercury climbed above 30°C
as far north as central Virginia as the week ended [COLD - Ending at 4
weeks].
4. North-Central Argentina:
HEAVY RAINS RETURN
Moderate to heavy rains (50 to 100 mm) dominated Cordoba, San Luis, and
southern Santiago Del Estero provinces of north-central Argentina, with
torrential rains (100 to 200 mm) reported in central Cordoba, where 8-week
moisture surpluses exceeded 100 mm [WET - Up to 9 weeks].
5. Mediterranean Basin:
WARM ANOMALY REMAINS
Temperature departures of +2°C to +5°C again prevailed over a region
extending from southern France southward to Morocco and eastward into the
Middle East. Highs were generally in the twenties (°C), except for
the interior portions of Morocco, where the mercury soared above 30°C
[WARM - Up to 6 weeks].
6. Northwestern Africa:
DRYNESS CONTINUES
Little or no rain fell over the northern portions of Morocco, Algeria,
and Tunisia as the unusually dry weather continued. Short-term moisture
shortages reached 100 mm at a few locations in Morocco and Algeria [DRY
- Up to 5 weeks]
7. East-Central Asia:
DRYNESS EXPANDS EASTWARD
Little or no rain fell on the region, with very dry conditions from China's
Sichuan Province eastward to the Yellow Sea. Dryness has also developed
over the Korean Peninsula and much of Japan. Short-term moisture deficits,
however, remained below 100 mm [DRY - Up to 6 weeks].
8. Central China:
WARMTH PERSISTS
Temperature departures of +2°C to +5°C continued over central China
from Gansu southward to Yunnan. The mercury remained above freezing throughout
the region while highs were generally in the twenties (°C) [WARM -
Up to 10 weeks].
9. Southeastern Asia and the Philippines:
MORE HEAVY RAINS
Scattered storms again doused parts of the region from the Malay Peninsula
eastward to the Philippine Islands with heavy rain (up to 150 mm). During
the past 8 weeks, moisture surpluses of 100 to 200 mm accumulated, with
excesses of 200 mm or more at a few locations [WET - Up to 10 weeks].
10. Western and Central Australia:
UNSEASONABLY COLD CONDITIONS ABATE
Temperatures averaged 1°C to 3°C below normal across the Northern
Territory and the central and northern portions of Western Australia, with
weekly lows generally below 20°C and highs above 30°C [COLD - Ending
at 4 weeks].
