Weekly Global Climate Highlights Map for April 21, 2001

1. California:

COLD POCKETS REMAIN
Weekly departures of -2°C to -3°C prevailed across California while near-normal temperatures covered the remainder of the West. Weekly lows were generally between 1°C and 5°C while highs ranged from 20°C to 29°C [COLD - Up to 3 weeks].

2. Argentina:

WET WEATHER ABATES
Moderate to heavy rains (50 to 100 mm) were restricted to southern Cordoba and southwestern Buenos Aires while light to moderate rain (25 to 50 mm) fell on eastern La Rioja and western Santiago Del Estero. Little or no rain was reported elsewhere. During the last 8 weeks, the region has received 100 to 500 mm of precipitation, yielding short-term moisture surpluses of 50 to 350 mm [WET - Up to 11 weeks].

3. Central South America:

WARM ANOMALY DOMINATES REGION
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 5°C above normal, with weekly departures locally reaching +6°C to +7°C in southern Brazil and southern Uruguay. Weekly highs of 30°C to 37°C prevailed across northern Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and the interior sections of southern Brazil while readings of 27°C to 29°C were reported elsewhere. Temperatures remained above freezing across the entire region during the week [WARM - Up to 3 weeks].

4. Central Europe:

COLD CONDITIONS SHIFT SOUTHWARD
Temperatures were 3°C to 6°C below normal across Europe from central Scandinavia southward to the Alps, with weekly departures of -6°C to -9°C in parts of southern Sweden, eastern France, southern Germany, and western Austria. Subfreezing lows dominated the entire region [COLD - Up to 3 weeks].

5. Northern Morocco:

MORE DRY WEATHER
Little or no rain fell on northern Morocco again last week. Above normal temperatures (see item below) exacerbated the unusually dry conditions. Between February 25 and April 21, fewer than 65 mm of rain was reported across the region, resulting in precipitation shortfalls of 50 to 140 mm [DRY - Up to 7 weeks].

6. Morocco and Canary Islands:

TEMPERATURES REMAIN SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL
Temperatures were generally 1°C to 2°C above normal, with highs ranging from 24°C to 33°C. The unusually warm conditions aggravated the dryness in northern Morocco [WARM - Up to 8 weeks].

7. Southern Africa:

UNUSUALLY WET WEATHER PREVAILS
Moderate to heavy rains (50 to 100 mm) soaked northern North West and north-central Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa while weekly rainfall totals of 25 to 50 mm were measured across most of North West and Orange Free State provinces. Between 100 and 300 mm of rain has fallen on the region during the past 8 weeks, allowing moisture surpluses of 50 to 170 mm to accumulate [WET - Up to 6 weeks].

8. North-Central Siberia:

COLD ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Temperatures averaged 6°C to 9°C below normal last week, with weekly departures reaching -10°C to -12°C at a few locations. The mercury plummeted below -40°C at a few locations and dropped below -20°C across the entire region. Highs failed to reach the freezing mark across the northern two-thirds of the region [COLD - Up to 3 weeks].

9. East-Central Asia:

RAINS BRING RELIEF TO SOUTHERN SECTIONS, BUT STILL VERY DRY ELSEWHERE
Abundant rainfall (25 to 100 mm) brought relief from very dry conditions to Hubei, southern Anhui, northern Zhejiang, and Shanghai provinces of east-central China and to Kyushu and Shikoku Islands of southwestern Japan. Meanwhile, little or no rain fell on the remainder of the region. Short-term moisture deficits ranged from 50 to 230 mm across the region [DRY - Up to 8 weeks].
