Weekly Global Climate Highlights Map for June 16, 2001

1. Northwestern United States and Southwestern Canada:

COLD ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Weekly departures of -2°C to -4°C dominated the Pacific Northwest, northern Rockies, and British Columbia. Lows ranged from 1°C to 10°C across the region, with subfreezing temperatures reported at the higher elevations. Highs were generally in the twenties (°C) [COLD - Up to 2 weeks].

2. North-Central United States:

A RELATIVELY DRY WEEK
Although as much as 125 mm of rain fell on some locations in southern Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota, most of the area received only 10 to 50 mm during the past week. Since April 22, precipitation totaled 200 to 325 mm, yielding short-term moisture surpluses of 50 to 110 mm [WET - Up to 13 weeks].

3. South-Central United States and Adjacent Parts of Mexico:

WARM ANOMALY ABATES
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 3°C above normal in southern and western Texas, southeastern New Mexico, and extreme northeastern Mexico, with highs of 40°C to 42°C in parts of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. Readings of 30°C to 39°C prevailed elsewhere [WARM - Up to 7 weeks].

4. Southern and Eastern United States:

REMNANTS OF ALLISON FUEL TORRENTIAL RAINS
Between 100 and 500 mm of rain inundated the Gulf Coasts of Mississippi and Alabama, northern Florida, and southern Georgia while 50 to 200 mm soaked  much of the South and East between the Appalachians and the Atlantic Seaboard. According to press reports, localized severe flooding has claimed several lives and caused considerable damage in parts of the region [Episodic Event].

5. Central South America:

UNUSUALLY WARM WEATHER CONTINUES
Weekly departures of +3°C to +7°C dominated northern and central Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southwestern Brazil. The mercury soared above 30°C at many locations across the northern half of the region while highs were in the twenties (°C) elsewhere. Temperatures remained above freezing throughout the week [WARM - Up to 4 weeks].

6. Uruguay and Adjacent Parts of Brazil and Argentina:

PRECIPITATION SURPLUSES REMAIN
Moderate to heavy rains (25 to 100 mm) fell on the western, southern, and eastern sections of Uruguay while only 10 to 25 mm were recorded elsewhere. Between 200 and 600 mm of rain have fallen on Uruguay during the past 8 weeks, allowing moisture surpluses of 100 to 400 mm to accumulate [WET - Up to 10 weeks].

7. Northern Europe:

UNSEASONABLY COOL WEATHER PERSISTS
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 5°C below normal across Scotland and Scandinavia during the past week. Subfreezing lows prevailed across southern Norway while lows ranged from 1°C to 10°C elsewhere. The mercury failed to reach 20°C at most locations [COLD - Up to 6 weeks].

8. Southern Europe:

RAINS EASE DRYNESS IN PARTS OF REGION
Moderate rains (25 to 60 mm) soaked southeastern France, Yugoslavia, and southern Romania, bringing relief from long term dryness. Little or no rain, however, fell over the remainder of the area. For the last 8 weeks,  less than 80 mm has fallen (except in the higher elevations) as moisture deficits of 50 to 190 mm have accumulated [DRY - Up to 9 weeks].

9. Northwestern Africa:

 HEAT CONTINUES
Temperature departures of +2°C to +6°C again covered Morocco and northern Algeria. The mercury soared  to as high as 39°C at Ouarzazate, Morocco (31°N)  [WARM - Up to 5 weeks].

10. India:

COLD ANOMALY DEVELOPS; EARLY MONSOON RAINS
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 5°C below normal over India from Maharashtra southward across Tamil Nadu. Readings reached as low as 20°C at Begampet (17°N) [COLD - Up to 2 weeks]. Torrential rains (in excess of 200 mm) fell at some locations, and much of India received 50 to 200 mm [WET - Up to 6 weeks].

11. East-Central Asia:

DRYNESS CONTINUES
Little or no rain fell on much of northern Nei Mongol and Heilongjiang Provinces of China and adjacent portions of Russia. During the last 8 weeks, less than 65 mm of precipitation as fallen, yielding moisture departures of 50 to 70 mm [DRY - Up to 16 weeks].

12. Eastern and North-Central Asia:

WARM CONDITIONS REMAIN
High temperatures, characterized by weekly departures of +3°C to +9°C, covered central Siberia while temperatures averaging 2°C to 4°C above normal prevailed southward across Korea and the Yangtze Valley of China. The mercury soared to 34°C at Kusong, Korea (40°N) [WARM - Up to 10 weeks].

13. East-Central China:

RAINS SCATTERED
Moderate to heavy rains (25 to 80 mm) were limited to eastern China from southern Shaanxi eastward to the Yellow Sea. During the last 8 weeks, moisture deficits of 60 to 140 mm have accumulated in the region [DRY - Up to 16 weeks].
