Weekly Global Climate Highlights Map for June 23, 2001

1. Northwestern North America:

WARM AND DRY CONDITIONS DEVELOP
Weekly temperatures averaged 3 to 6°C above normal across southern Alaska and southwestern Yukon. The mercury reached as high as 29°C at Talkeetna, Alaska (62°N) [WARM - Up to 4 weeks].  Little or no rain also fell across the area as rainfall has totaled under 50% of normal for the past 4 weeks [DRY - Up to 4 weeks].

2. Central United States:

MORE HEAVY RAINS
Heavy thunderstorms spread across eastern Kansas and northern Missouri, leaving 100 to 200 mm of rain. Rainfall totaled 25 to 50 mm in much of Wisconsin and southeastern Nebraska, as well as in parts of Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. Cumulative rainfall has been 175 mm or more above normal in the past 90 days over much of this region [WET - Up to 14 weeks].

3. Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada:

WARMTH PERSISTS
Weekly temperature departures of +2°C to +5°C prevailed over much of New England and the Maritime Provinces of Canada.  The mercury soared to 32°C as far north as Greenwood, Nova Scotia (45°N) [WARM - 2 weeks].

4. Eastern United States:

HEAVY RAINS
Thunderstorms deposited 50 to 200 mm of rain from Virginia northward to northern New England, resulting in numerous reports of local flooding,  During the past 30 days, rainfall surpluses exceeded 75 mm for much of the area [WET - Up to 5 weeks].

5. East-Central South America:

DRIER WEATHER PREVAILS
Light to moderate rains (10 to 30 mm) were limited to eastern Uruguay while little or no rain fell over the remainder of the county. Since the end of April, 200 to 500 mm has still fallen over the region, yielding  moisture surpluses of 60 to 340 mm [WET  - Up to 5 weeks].

6. Central Europe:

COLD ANOMALY DIMINISHES
Cool conditions were limited to northern Germany and northwestern Poland, with temperatures averaging 2°C to 3°C below normal. Readings dropped into the single digits (°C) over most of the region [COLD - Ending at 7 weeks].

7. Southern Europe:

DRYNESS CONTINUES
Light to moderate showers (10 to 35 mm) were widely scattered from France and northern Spain southeastward to Greece and Turkey. For the last 8 weeks, less than 100 mm has fallen in much of the area, allowing moisture deficits of 50 to 175 mm to accumulate [DRY - Up to 10 weeks].

8. Northwestern Africa:

 HEAT CONTINUES
Temperature departures of +2°C to +7°C again prevailed over Morocco and northwestern Algeria. The mercury reached as high as 43°C at Al Asnam, Algeria (36°N)  [WARM - Up to 6 weeks].

9. India:

COLD ANOMALY REMAINS; MONSOON RAINS DIMINISH
Weekly departures of -2°C to -4°C below dominated central Pakistan southward and the Indian states of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.  Temperatures dropped to 18°C at Allahabad, India (25°N) [COLD - Up to 3 weeks]. Heavy monsoon rains (more than 100 mm) were limited to northern Madhya Pradesh [WET  - Up to 7 weeks]

10. Eastern and North-Central Asia:

WARM CONDITIONS REMAIN
Temperatures averaging 3°C to 6°C above normal persisted over central Siberia while weekly departures of +2°C to +4°C prevailed to the south across eastern Mongolia, northeastern China, Korea, and southern Japan. The mercury climbed to 35°C as far north as Choybalsan, Mongolia (48°N) [WARM - Up to 10 weeks].

11. Northeastern China and Adjacent Siberia:

DRYNESS CONTINUES
Little or no rain fell on most of northern Nei Mongol and Heilongjiang Provinces of China and adjacent portions of Russia. Since April 29, less than 70 mm as fallen, yielding as moisture deficits of 50 to 90 mm [DRY - Up to 16 weeks].

12. East-Central China:

TYPHOON CHEBI BATTERS CHINA
According to press reports, strong winds, heavy rains, and serious flooding from Typhoon Chebi claimed numerous lives and destroyed numerous buildings in Fujian Province of China [Episodic Event].
