1. Western and Central United States:
WARMTH DIMINISHES IN THE WEST
Temperatures dropped to near normal levels in the Southwest, but abnormal
heat persisted in the Pacific Northwest and the southern Plains, with readings
3 to 6°C above normal in both regions. Highs routinely exceeded
32°C in the Pacific Northwest, and reached as high as 40°C
in Oklahoma and northern Texas, although some cooling occurred toward the
week's end in the Plains [WARM - Up to 4 weeks].
2. South-Central United States:
DRYNESS CONTINUES
Thunderstorms brought some relief from dryness to western parts of Kansas
and Oklahoma and to the Texas Panhandle, but rainfall was sparse from central
Texas northward into eastern Kansas. Thirty-day rainfall has totaled less
than 25% of typical amounts from southwestern Oklahoma into western Texas,
with moisture deficits exceeding 50 mm in parts of both states [DRY - Up
to 7 weeks].
3. North-Central United States:
UNUSUALLY DRY CONDITIONS DEVELOP
Rainfall has been below normal from the eastern Dakotas southeastward into
Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota during the past 4 weeks, with
rainfall less than 25% of normal in parts of Iowa and southern Minnesota.
Since June 20, less than 25 mm of rain has fallen across much of the region,
with amounts as little as 3 mm in some locations. Precipitation shortfalls
of 50 to 100 mm are common over the past 4 weeks [DRY - Up to 4 weeks].
4. Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada:
COOL CONDITIONS DEVELOP
Temperatures averaged 3°C to 6°C below normal from the Ohio Valley
into the Northeast the past 2 weeks, with damaging frost reported in Michigan
in early July [COLD - 2 weeks].
5. Southern Europe:
DRYNESS CONTINUES
Little or no rain fell on much of southeastern France and northern Italy,
with scattered showers of up to 30 mm limited to northern Italy. During
the past 8 weeks, less than 80 mm has fallen in much of the area as moisture
deficits of 50 to 170 mm have accumulated [DRY - Up to 13 weeks].
6. Europe:
WARM ANOMALY COVERS MUCH OF CONTINENT
Temperature departures of +2°C to +4°C prevailed over much of Europe.
The mercury soared to 30°C as far north as Kauhava, Finland (63°N)
[WARM - Up to 9 weeks].
7. Western Asian Russia:
WETNESS CONTINUES
Thunderstorms spread moderate to heavy rains (15 to 120 mm) across much
of western Siberia. Since May 20th, rainfall totaled 150 to 260 mm in much
of the region, yielding moisture excesses of 50 to 160 mm [WET - Up to
14 weeks].
8. Eastern Siberia:
WARM CONDITIONS REMAIN
High temperatures (weekly departures of +2°C to +7°C) persisted
over eastern Siberia as readings climbed to 31°C as far north as Dzhardzhan,
Russia (69°N) [WARM - Up to 13 weeks].
9. East-Central Asia:
WARMTH CONTINUES
Weekly temperature departures of +2°C to +5°C prevailed over a
large region extending from China's Sichuan and Gansu Provinces eastward
across Japan. The mercury soared to 41°C at Zhumadian, China (33°N)
[WARM - Up to 13 weeks].
10. Northwestern India:
COOL CONDITIONS DIMINISH
Temperatures averaged 1°C to 3°C below normal as warmer temperatures
returned to the region [COLD - Ending at up to 6 weeks].
