Weekly Global Climate Highlights Map for August 18, 2001

1. New England and Southeastern Canada:

WARM ANOMALY CONTINUES NORTHEASTWARD TREK
Unusually warm conditions, characterized by weekly temperature departures of +2°C to +6°C, dominated the Canadian Maritime Province while readings were within 2°C of normal in the Northeast, Ontario, and Quebec. Highs of 30°C to 32°C were scattered across southeastern Ontario,  parts of New Brunswick, and the northeastern United States, but ranged from 20°C to 29°C in the Quebec and the rest of the Maritimes [WARM - Up to 8 weeks].

2. Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada:

MODERATE RAINS BRING SOME RELIEF TO COAST, BUT STILL QUITE DRY ELSEWHERE
Moderate to heavy showers (50 to 125 mm) brought limited relief to north-central Pennsylvania and the Atlantic Seaboard, but less than 50 mm fell on the remainder of the region. Precipitation totals for the last 8 weeks were below 150 mm, allowing short-term moisture deficits of 100 to 150 mm to persist around Lake Erie and in parts of the Atlantic Seaboard. Meanwhile, 8-week precipitation shortfalls ranged from 50 to 100 mm elsewhere [DRY - Up to 9 weeks].

3. Texas, Mexico, and Central America:

PRECIPITATION SHORTAGES CONTINUE
Scattered moderate showers delivered 25 to 100 mm of rain to scattered parts of central Texas and to central and southern Mexico, but fewer than 25 mm of precipitation fell elsewhere. During the last 8 weeks, the region received only 40 to 200 mm of rain, allowing short-term moisture deficits of 100 to 420 mm to accumulate [DRY - Up to 15 weeks].

4. Paraguay:

MOISTURE DEFICITS PERSIST
Between 25 and 50 mm of rain dampened extreme southern Paraguay, but little or no precipitation was recorded elsewhere. 8-week moisture deficits ranged from 50 to 100 mm [DRY - Up to 9 weeks].

5. Central South America:

STRONG WARM ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Temperatures averaged 5°C to 8°C above normal across eastern Paraguay, southern Brazil, and most of Uruguay while weekly departures of +2°C to +4°C prevailed across the rest of the region. The mercury soared above 30°C across Paraguay and parts of southern Brazil while readings in the twenties (°C) dominated Uruguay and northeastern Argentina. Lows failed to reach freezing throughout the affected region [WARM - Up to 3 weeks].

6. Central and Eastern Europe:

STILL ABNORMALLY DRY
Fewer than 25 mm of rain fell on most of the region, but 25 to 50 mm were recorded in parts of Austria and the Czech Republic, and in west-central Romania. During the last 8 weeks, 100 to 300 mm of precipitation fell in the Alps while less than 100 mm were reported across the remainder of the region. Short-term moisture shortages of 100 to 200 mm dominated from southeastern France eastward across the Alps to Slovakia and Hungary, but moisture deficits were less than 100 mm elsewhere [DRY - Up to 8 weeks].

7. Eastern Europe and Western Asia:

POSITIVE TEMPERATURE DEPARTURES REMAIN
Weekly temperature departures ranged from +2°C to +6°C from Belarus and the Ukraine eastward through western Asian Russia with the mercury soaring to 30°C as far north as Pskov, Russia (58°N). Lows remained above 20°C on the shores of the Black Sea [WARM - Up to 14 weeks].

8. Western Africa:

DRY ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Although 25 to 100 mm of rain fell on the western Sahel region, precipitation totals for the last 4 to 5 weeks were in the lowest 10% of the climatological distribution [DRY - Up to 5 weeks].

9. Arabian Peninsula and Northeastern Africa:

HIGH TEMPERATURES PERSIST
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 5°C above normal across southeastern Libya, southern and central Egypt, northern Sudan, and the Arabian Peninsula while Oman recorded a departure of +7°C. Highs ranged from 40°C to 47°C across most of central and southern Egypt, northern Sudan, and the Arabian Peninsula while readings in the thirties prevailed elsewhere. The mercury remained above 30°C in west-central Saudi Arabia, the Persian Gulf Coast of Saudi Arabia, and extreme northeastern Sudan, but lows were in the twenties (°C) elsewhere [WARM - Up to 14 weeks].

10. Southeastern Siberia, Eastern Mongolia, and Northeastern China:

VERY WARM WEATHER PREVAILS
Weekly temperature departures of +2°C to +5°C, with locally higher departures to +7°C, dominated southeastern Siberia, eastern Mongolia, and adjacent parts of China. Highs were in the thirties (°C) across northeastern China, eastern Mongolia, and adjacent parts of Siberia while readings in the twenties (°C) prevailed around Lake Baikal and north-central Mongolia. The mercury remained above freezing across the entire region [WARM - Up to 18 weeks].

11. Japan:

MORE VERY DRY WEATHER
Little or no rain fell on Honshu and Shikoku, except for isolated showers of 50 to 100 mm along the immediate southern coast of the two islands. Between June 24 and August 18, Japan has received 50 to 425 mm of rain, resulting in highly variable short-term precipitation shortfalls of 50 to 500 mm [DRY - Up to 12 weeks].
