WARM WEATHER DOMINATES REGION
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 5°C above normal, with locally higher
departures of +6°C to +7°C in parts of the western Great Basin.
The mercury soared above 40°C in southeastern California and western
Arizona while highs in the thirties (°C) dominated the West as far
north as southwestern Idaho. Meanwhile, readings exceeded 20°C as far
north as southern Alberta and central Saskatchewan. Subfreezing lows prevailed
from northeastern Nevada and central Utah northward while the mercury remained
above 20°C in southern Nevada, western Arizona, and southeastern California
[WARM - Up to 7 weeks].
2. Nova Scotia:
STILL VERY DRY
Little or no rain fell on the province during the past week. Short-term
precipitation shortfalls ranged from 50 to 200 mm [DRY - Up to 16 weeks].
3. Southern and Eastern United States:
UNUSUALLY COLD WEATHER PERSISTS
Weekly departures of -2°C to -5°C dominated the central, southern,
and eastern United States, with temperatures averaging as much as 5°C
below normal in central Texas. Subfreezing lows penetrated as far south
as western Arizona and northern Texas. Meanwhile, the mercury dropped below
10°C as far south as central Texas and southern Alabama. Highs were
generally in the thirties (°C) across the Great Plains and the Gulf
Coast and in the twenties elsewhere [COLD - Up to 4 weeks].
4. Florida:
DRY WEATHER PROVIDES RELIEF
Isolated rain showers dropped up to 100 mm at a few locations in west-central
and southeastern Florida, but most of the state received little or no precipitation.
During the last 8 weeks, 300 to 600 mm of rain soaked Florida, resulting
in short-term moisture excesses of 50 to 225 mm [WET - Up to 9 weeks].
5. Uruguay:
WARM ANOMALY DEVELOPS
Weekly departures of +2°C to +4°C dominated the southeastern half
of Uruguay, with highs approaching 25°C as far north as Rocha (35°S).
The mercury remained above freezing throughout the week [WARM - Up to 3
weeks].
6. Northern Argentina:
UNUSUALLY WET WEATHER RETURNS
Moderate to heavy rains (25 to 100 mm) dominated Cordoba, San Luis, La
Pampa, northwestern Buenos Aires, and southern Santa Fe during the past
week. Between August 12 and October 6, precipitation totaled 100 to 400
mm, yielding short-term moisture excesses of 50 to 220 mm [WET - Up to
6 weeks].
7. Central Europe:
WESTERN SECTIONS REMAIN WET; FAVORABLY DRY ELSEWHERE
Light to moderate rains (10 to 50 mm) were reported across eastern England,
most of France, the Benelux Countries, and scattered locations in Germany
while little or none was reported throughout the remainder of the region.
During the past 8 weeks, precipitation totals varied from 100 to 300 mm,
allowing moisture surpluses of 50 to 200 mm to accumulate [WET - Up to
7 weeks].
8. China:
STILL VERY DRY
Light to moderate precipitation (25 to 50 mm) fell on Hubei, Guizhou, northern
Hunan, and southwestern Anhui while little or none was reported elsewhere.
Generally less than 200 mm of rain fell on central and eastern China during
the last 8 weeks, yielding short-term moisture deficits of 50 to 300 mm
[DRY - Up to 16 weeks].
9. The Philippines:
SHORT-TERM PRECIPITATION DEFICITS REMAIN
Between 25 and 100 mm of rain fell on the archipelago during the past week.
Since August 12, the Philippines received 100 to 500 mm of rain, resulting
in 8-week precipitation shortfalls of 100 to 300 mm [DRY - Up to 9 weeks].
10. Victoria and Tasmania:
ABOVE-NORMAL TEMPERATURES PREVAIL
Temperatures were generally 1°C to 3°C above normal during the
past week. Highs were generally in the twenties (°C) while lows remained
above freezing, except at isolated higher elevations [WARM - Up to 4 weeks].
