1. Eastern United States:
RAINS EASE DRYNESS
Showers and thunderstorms brought 10 to 60 mm of precipitation to most of the upper Ohio Valley and middle Atlantic Seaboard at the end of
the week. Despite the beneficial rains, 8-week moisture shortages of 50 to 100 mm still
exist in much of the region. Please see the United States Drought Monitor for more details
[DRY - Up to 11 weeks].
2. Western and Central Europe:
WETNESS CONTINUES
Between 25 and 100 mm of precipitation soaked Ireland, Scotland, Wales, northern and southern England, the Benelux Countries, and
Denmark while showers of up to 40 mm were scattered across the remainder of the area. Since
January 6, 100 to 550 mm of precipitation has accumulated in most of the region, resulting in
moisture surpluses of 50 to 160 mm [WET - Up to 8 weeks].
3. Northwestern Africa and Southeastern Europe:
DRYNESS PERSISTS
Little or no rain again fell on the region, except for 10 to 60 mm at scattered locations in extreme northern Morocco and
Turkey. Generally less than 100 mm of precipitation has been reported during the last 8
weeks, yielding moisture deficits of 50 to 160 mm in northwestern Africa, and 50 to 300 mm in
Turkey and southeastern Europe. [DRY - Up to 9 weeks].
4. Southeastern Africa:
SHOWERS BRING SOME RELIEF TO PARTS OF REGION
Although 10 to 80 mm of rain brought relief to northern South Africa, most of the region received little or no rain.
During the past 8 weeks, rainfall amounts below 160 mm were reported in northeastern South
Africa and less than 275 mm in southern Mozambique, yielding precipitation shortfalls of 50
to 300 mm [DRY - Up to 8 weeks].
5. Asia and Eastern Europe:
LARGE WARM ANOMALY CONTINUES
Temperatures again averaged 4°C to
9°C above normal from eastern Europe eastward to southwestern Siberia and southward to
Thailand and northern Vietnam. Except in Siberia, the mercury pushed above freezing over the
region.[WARM - Up to 8 weeks].
6. Central Australia:
COOL AIR REMAINS
Weekly departures of -3°C to -6°C again prevailed
across northern South Australia, southern Northern Territory, and eastern Western Australia,
with temperatures falling below 20°C throughout the region. [COLD - Up to 5 weeks].
