Weekly Global Climate Highlights Map for June 1, 2002

1. Southwestern Canada and Northwestern United States:

MODERATE RAINS REPORTED
Between 25 to 70 mm of rain brought more relief to the recent dryness in much of the region.  However, for the last 8 weeks,  less than 100 mm has fallen in some of the area as moisture deficits of 50 to 150 mm remain (See the United States Drought Monitor for more details)  [DRY - Ending at 7 weeks].

2. South-Central United States:

RAINS EASE DRYNESS
Thunderstorms brought 20 to 80 mm of rain to portions of eastern and central Texas and Oklahoma, but the remainder of the south-central United States received little or no rain. Fewer than 150 mm of rain fell since April 7th in much of the region, resulting in short-term moisture deficits of 50 to 170 mm (See the United States Drought Monitor for more details) [DRY - Up to 8 weeks].

3. Northeastern United States:

THUNDERSTORMS KEEP PARTS OF AREA WET
Moderate to heavy rains (25 to 90 mm) were scattered from southwestern Missouri northeastward to southern New England. During the last 8 weeks, precipitation totaled 150 to 500 mm over much of the region, resulting in moisture surpluses of 50 to 250 mm [WET - Up to 8 weeks].

4. East-Central South America:

HEAVY RAINS CONTINUE IN PARTS OF REGION
Heavy rains (50 to 100 mm) soaked much of Uruguay and parts of northeastern Argentina and Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil while 10 to 25 mm of rain dampened the remainder of the  region. Precipitation during the last several months ranged from 200 to 700 mm, allowing moisture excesses of 70 to 450 mm to accumulate [WET - Up to 18 weeks].

5. Europe:

WARM ANOMALY DIMINISHES
Temperatures averaged 1°C to 3°C above normal across northern Great Britain and southern Scandinavia as cooler air moved into the region [WARM - Up to 9 weeks].

6. Western Asia and Eastern Europe:

COLD AIR REMAINS ENTRENCHED
Weekly departures of -3°C to as low as -9°C dominated European Russia and western Siberia as temperatures again remained below 20°C across the northern half of the region, and failed to reach 30°C throughout [COLD - Up to 6 weeks].

7. China:

MORE WET WEATHER
Moderate to heavy precipitation (25 to 80 mm) was scattered across southern China from Yunnan northeastward to Jiangsu Province.  Since April 7th, the region has received between 100 to 625 mm of rain, yielding short-term moisture surpluses of 50 to 335 mm [WET - Up to 10 weeks].
