FROM JANUARY 2016 THROUGH THE END OF FEBRUARY 2016, RAINFALL TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS WERE: - LIHUE AIRPORT 1.17 INCHES (17 PERCENT OF NORMAL) - HONOLULU AIRPORT 0.43 INCHES (10 PERCENT OF NORMAL) - KAHULUI AIRPORT 1.55 INCHES (33 PERCENT OF NORMAL) - HILO AIRPORT 4.57 INCHES (24 PERCENT OF NORMAL) THE CFS AND OTHER CLIMATE MODELS RUN AS A PART OF THE NORTH-AMERICAN MULTI-MODEL ENSEMBLE (NMME) PREDICT ABOVE-NORMAL SSTS SURROUNDING THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE MONTH OF MARCH 2016. THIS ELEVATES THE CHANCES OF ABOVE-NORMAL MONTHLY MEAN AIR TEMPERATURES FOR THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS IN MARCH 2016. NCEP TOOLS INDICATE BELOW MEDIAN PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS IN MARCH 2016. EL NINO CONDITIONS CONTINUED ACROSS THE EQUATORIAL PACIFIC OCEAN WITH SST ANOMALIES REDUCED IN MAGNITUDE ACROSS MOST OF THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN EQUATORIAL PACIFIC OCEAN COMPARED TO LAST MONTH. POSITIVE SUBSURFACE TEMPERATURE ANOMALIES WERE OBSERVED ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN EQUATORIAL PACIFIC, WHILE NEGATIVE ANOMALIES HAVE EXTENDED EASTWARD AND ARE NEAR 120W. ENHANCED CONVECTION HAS PERSISTED OVER THE CENTRAL AND EAST-CENTRAL PACIFIC OCEAN. LOW-LEVEL WESTERLY WIND ANOMALIES AND UPPER-LEVEL EASTERLY WIND ANOMALIES CONTINUED. A TRANSITION TO ENSO-NEUTRAL IS LIKELY DURING LATE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE SPRING OR EARLY SUMMER 2016, WITH CLOSE TO A 50 PERCENT CHANCE FOR LA NINA CONDITIONS TO DEVELOP BY THE FALL. NMME MODELS PREDICT A TENDENCY FOR ABOVE-NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR HAWAII FROM AMJ 2016 TO ASO 2016. EQUAL CHANCES (EC) FOR ABOVE-, NEAR-, OR BELOW-NORMAL TEMPERATURES ARE ANTICIPATED AT ALL LOCATIONS FOR SON 2016 AND BEYOND.
