Climate monitoring

Operational activities for climate monitoring

The WMO RCC-Washington monitors the current state of ocean-land-atmosphere system by using different variables, such as Sea Surface Temperatures (SST), 2m air temperature, precipitation and wind, over the WMO Regional Association IV and the sub-region on the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico. These parameters are derived from several sources:

  • gridded data: CPC Gridded Global Temperature, Climate Data Assimilation System (CDAS) analysis, CPC unified gauge analysis and Optimum Interpolation (OI) analysis
  • observing stations and reports: Global Telecommunication System (GTS) station reports
  • satellite estimates: CPC Morphing Technique (CMORPH) estimates and infrared satellite images.

The WMO RCC-Washington provides access to these real-time regionalized climate monitoring products that constitute a valuable source of information to support effective decision-making process and form a basis for operational long-range forecasting and climate research.
