Several historical SST analyses have been developed by different centers
over the last 10+ years. With each new analysis, problems are detected
and adjustments are made. Presented here is the latest NOAA/NCDC
historical SST reconstruction, which will become available in early
2007. The biggest differences between this and the previous version is
improved tuning of the low-frequency component of the reconstruction.
That improvement allows the analysis to produces stronger anomalies with
less uncertainty in the 19th and early 20th century. Other improvements
affect the more recent period. These include bias adjustment of buoys
relative to ships, inclusion of bias-adjusted AVHRR satellite data, and
improved sea-ice estimates.
