Abstract Title: A Diagnostic Case Study of the Extreme Summer Drought over East Asia in 1994
Abstract: East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is the largest, the most complex and energetic monsoon system in the world. It is basically caused by thermal contrast between land and ocean, but governed by a lot of factors due to not only the geographical uniqueness but also the nonlinear multi-scale interaction of atmospheric disturbances from meso- to planetary scales. Most countries in East Asia usually suffer from severe flood/droughts due to the interannual and/or intraseasonal variability of the EASM rainfall. During the last few decades since the late 1970s, East Asia experienced a record-breaking severe drought in 1994 summer. Previous studies demonstrated that a cause of this severe drought results from the absence of monsoon rainfall during July 1994 over the East Asia. In our study, the spatial and temporal characteristics of 1994 summer drought over East Asia were analyzed. A large-scale circulation as well as global SST anomaly pattern associated with the drought was also investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between the EASM activity and drought occurrence over East Asia for the 29-yr period of 1979-2007 will be shown. Based on our analyses, impacts of the EASM on drought over East Asia will be discussed at the workshop.
