Subject: Re: NCEP Reanalysis 2
Dear Kevin,
Here is the reasons of the changes and the complete list of the location
of the files. This list was created for NCAR who is now officially
archiving the Reanalysis-2 data for distribution.
Note that the naming prod_v02.A.vsn01 implies:
prod_v02 ... production model version 02.
A ... run configuration A.
vsn01 ... observation data pocessing version 01.
Major change log.
1) After 9/82 (inclusive), minor change was made to the cloud tuning
table. Since the change was very small, we decided to run only the 6-hour
forecast part of the data assimilation for the period 1/79-8/82. This
version was named prod_v02.C.vsn01. These reruns only affected diagnostic
and forecast files. Since the impact on forecast was small, we did not
post process forecast files.
2) The bitmap was not properly created (missing was set to zero) in the
diagnostics files during 1/79-12/89. This caused erroneous monthly means
for cloud top and bottom related quantities. The proper use of bitmaps
are incorporated and flx.ft0[06].yyyymmddhh.grib and
dg3.ft0[06].yyyymmddhh.grib files and the associated monthly average files
are regenerated. These corrected 6-hourly and monthly average files are
moved to archive.nersc.gov (note that both .C. and .A. directories are
affected).
3) There are many problems in observation processing for the period
1/96-11/96. The observation processing were redone and the verion name
was changed to prod_v02.A.vsn02 after 1/96.

3. 6-hourly 2-D and 3-D doagnostics grib file and cray cos binary zonal
average diagnostics files. ft00 indicates diagnostics for the first time

(some parameters such as 2-m temp, humidiy and 10-m winds are
instantatneous at forecast hour 6).

Note that there is no average znl files.
5. 6-hourly model level and surface ieee binary files (can be used for

Note that these files are not consistent with the coreesponding
sig.ft06.yyyymmddhh.ieee files for the period 1/79-12/95. See the
explanation A). If consistent post processed files are required, we will
provide portable post processing program that generates pgb and sgb files
from sig.ft06.yyyymmddhh.ieee files.

There are other more specialized data from complex quality control and
observation fit statistics but are not described here.
