Simulating Multi-Season Past Droughts

Abstract Title: Multi-model Response of Idealized SST Experiments within the US CLIVAR Drought Working Group

Abstract: As part of the US CLIVAR Drought Working Group, a set of AGCM experiments were performed by 5 modeling groups in the United States. These experiments are designed to understand the physical mechanism that relates changes in Sea-Surface Temperature to droughts/floods and other climate anomalies around the globe. The models are forced with the 3 leading modes of SST variability during the 20th Century. These modes are the trend, ENSO, and North Atlantic variability related to the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation.

Results presented here will show the relative role of each of these patterns have in producing floods and droughts around the globe. We will also touch on the mechanisms behind the ocean's role in forcing the atmosphere's response in the AGCMs.
