Jon Gottschalck has worked at CPC since September 2004 and was appointed CPC Head of Forecast Operations in April 2008.
Mr. Gottschalck is responsible for forecaster scheduling, product timeliness and quality, and the overall coordination and dissemination of CPC's official operational outlooks which include CPC's 6-10/8-14 day, monthly, seasonal and US hazard assessment forecasts. In addition to this role, Mr. Gottschalck also serves as the CPC Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) team lead and is responsible for managing MJO monitoring, assessment, and research activities and its associated impacts across the US and globally. He coordinates the production of the CPC weekly MJO update and global tropics hazards/benefits assessment and routinely briefs the NWS regions on the status and future evolution of the MJO. Mr. Gottschalck also actively serves as part of the US Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) MJO working group, conducts storm track monitoring and research related to extratropical storminess, monitors atmospheric blocking, and serves as the CPC point of contact to the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy (ACCAP) - one of NOAA's Regional Integrated Science and Assessment (RISA) centers.
Mr. Gottschalck earned both a B.S. and M.S. degree in meteorology from the Pennsylvania State University in 1994 and 1996 respectively. After graduation, he was employed at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) from 1997-2001. In this capacity, he worked in the area of boundary layer meteorology, cloud remote sensing, MJO research, and was the university forecast meteorologist and tropical cyclone spokesman. During the period from 2001-2004, Mr. Gottschalck was employed at NASA's Goddard Space FlightCenter (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland where he worked in the area of land-atmosphere interaction.
