Muthuvel Chelliah is currently a Physical Scientist in the Development Branch of the Climate Prediction Center (CPC). While at CPC (1988-present) he has been involved in the original NCEP/NCAR reanalysis project from quality control, monitoring to archival at CPC, and is now involved in the tropospheric monitoring of the 2nd generation of reanalysis products from the more complex Coupled Forecast System (CFS) at NCEP.
His research interests include the analysis of various aspects of the low frequency climate variability modes from both reanalysis and observations and their impacts global climate. His research on the tropical multidecadal climate variability modes contributed to the development and issue of NOAA's seasonal Hurricane Outlooks for the North Atlantic and North East Pacific ocean basins. His research interests also include monitoring the global monsoons and the development of an objective model based North American Drought Outlook.
He has authored and co-authored about twenty papers on topics ranging from reanalysis to multi decadal climate variability to new drought indices. He is the recipient of Gold (1998) and Bronze (2000) Medals from the U.S. Dept. of Commerce and the Distinguished Ph.D. award (2005) from the University of Maryland. Chelliah earned his Ph.D. degree (1985) in Meteorology from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, a Masters degree in Meteorology from University of Hawaii and a Masters degree in Physics from Madurai University in TamilNadu, India.
