CORe (Conventional Observation Reanalysis)
CORe is an atmospheric reanalysis produced by the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) NCEP/NWS/NOAA,
in collaboration with the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) NCEP/NWS/NOAA and the Physical Sciences
Laboratory (PSL) NOAA.
CORe is designed to replace the Climate Data Assimilation System (CDAS), the real-time extension to
the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis. CORe spans a similar time period as CDAS, covering
1950 to near real time (compared to 1948 to near real time for CDAS), and is designed to support
climate monitoring, one of the major missions of CPC.
Unlike most modern reanalyses, CORe does not assimilate satellite radiance
data except for Atmospheric Motion Vectors (AMV). This approach was chosen
to minimize spurious "climate shifts" caused by the introduction of satellite
observations, an issue that affected earlier NCEP/NCAR and Climate Forecast
System Reanalyses. As a result, CORe prioritizes improved climate trends
and anomalies rather than optimizing the best atmospheric state for weather forecasting.
Descriptions of the CORe can be found in the following presentations and documents

Archive
NCEP will distribute CORe through the cloud with support from
NODD
(NOAA Open Data Dissemination).
As of April 1, 2026, data from 1950-2025
have been uploaded. The NODD archive includes 3-hourly data, daily means, and monthly means,
and is updated in near real-time with 1-day latency.
Additional information is available on the archive page.
Status
- NCEP Director approved making CORe operational (implementation started 9/24/2024)
- NCEP Director approved running CDAS for 1 year for internal conversion to CORe.
- NCEP Director wanted stopping the public distribution of CDAS 30 days being operational.
- CORe was implemented on March 19, 2026.
