CORe (Conventional Observation Reanalysis)

CORe is an atmospheric reanalysis from the Climate Prediction Center NCEP/NWS/NOAA with collaboration with Environmental Modeling Center NCEP/NWS/NOAA and Physical Sciences Laboratory NOAA. CORe is designed to replace CDAS (real-time extension to NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis). CORe covers a similar period of time (1950 to real time vs 1948 to real time), and was designed for climate monitoring, one of the Climate Prediction Center's major tasks. Unlike most modern reanalyses, CORe does not assimilate satellite data except for Atmospheric Motion Vectors (AMV). This was done to eliminate spurious "climate shifts" caused by the ingest of satellite data. This problem affected the earlier NCEP/NCAR and Climate Forecast System Reanalyses. This design emphasizes improving the climate trends and anomalies over getting the best state for a forecast.

Descriptions of the CORe can be found in the following presentations and documents

  1. A brief introduction to CORe
  2. Improvements that CORe brings to climate monitoring
  3. Concepts of the CORe design
  4. Configuration of CORe
  5. Evaluation data sets
  6. For more information (PNS documentation)

Archive

NCEP is going to distribute CORe using the cloud with the support of NODD (NOAA Open Data Dissemination). As 9/9/2025, we have uploaded the 1950-2021 data, and are writing documentation and testing the archive. Until CORe is operational, you should consider the archive to be in beta testing. By demand, the NODD archive will include daily means and monthly means. More information is given in the archive page.

Status

  1. NCEP Director approved making CORe operational (implementation started 9/24/2024)
  2. NCEP Director approved running CDAS for 1 year for internal conversion to CORe.
  3. NCEP Director wanted stopping the public distribution of CDAS 30 days being operational.
  4. CORe is still undergoing process to make it operational (pre-parallel testing by NCO).
