Tropical Pacific Drifting Buoys

APRIL 2022

During April 2022, 187 satellite-tracked surface drifting buoys were reporting from the tropical Pacific. Very strong westward anomalies of ~50 cm/s were measured by a number of drifters in the near-equatorial band at 130-160W, a reversal of the eastward anomalies seen earlier in the year. Furhter to the east, near-equatorial eastward anomalies may have been associated with a Tropical Instability Wave.
